The development of tools for tracing and evaluating the genetic impact of fish from aquaculture: “AquaTrace”

This work was performed under the AquaTrace project, aiming to develop tools for tracing and evaluating the genetic impact of fish from aquaculture.

The AquaTrace project, aimed to develop tools for tracing and evaluating the genetic impact of fish from aquaculture, have produced extensive genomic resources of two commercial fish species: seabass and seabream. This work has mapped the structure of the genetic material of European seabass and gilt-head (sea) bream. The map is fully searchable and can be used to retrieve genomic information for multiple use.

Developed under the AquaTrace project, aimed to develop tools for tracing and evaluating the genetic impact of fish from aquaculture, on-line reports have been made availabel proving profiles of European seabass, gilt-head (sea) bream, turbot, Atlantic salmon and brown trout. The information in these reports compiles existing biological information about each species, such as life-history traits, distribution, biology and production; genetic and genomic characteristics; and, information about ecological, conservation, fisheries and aquaculture specific issues relating to them.

The AquaTrace project, aiming to develop tools for tracing and evaluating the genetic impact of fish from aquaculture, have developed a report on the status of breeding programs of 14 farmed species across 14 countries. This report includes a list of selected traits, reproductive technics, selection startegies and molecular tools employed.

The AquaTrace project, aiming to develop tools for tracing and evaluating the genetic impact of fish from aquaculture, have outlined the validated procedures and software utilised for the analysis of raw high-throughput sequence data (the Bioinformatic pipeline for ddRAD analysis). This is the methodology required for distinguishing genetic variation between fish species' families and populations.

This allows different families and/or populations within each species to be distinguised between (Single nucleotide polymorphisms using Double Digest RAD sequencing).
