Final Report Summary - SEECAT (Seeing through cataracts with advanced photonics)
During the SeeCat project, we made significant progress to better understand the nature of light scattering in the human eye. We studied both normal aging and cataract eyes. We have developed a new optical method based on the technique of optical integration to measure the amount of scatter. We have also devised new theoretical models to predict the effect of scatter in the retinal image and in vision. Several new experimental systems were completed to evaluate scatter and to overcome it. A custom SS-OCT allowed to visualize the full crystalline lens and to locate the opacities in cataracts. A single-pixel camera ophthalmoscope allowed to record images of the retina being more tolerant to scatter. An instrument based on wavefront-shaping was developed to both induced and correct scatter. It was used to simulate and correct cataract in normal subjects. We also made advances in wearable devices for ophthalmic applications. The future combination of the table-top experimental systems and the wearable systems may open the door for practical implementations of cataract corrector devices.
