Online Humanities Scholarship: A Digital Medical Library based on Ancient Texts

Final Report Summary - DIGMEDTEXT (Online Humanities Scholarship: A Digital Medical Library based on Ancient Texts)

DIGMEDTEXT focused on the Greek medical papyri, some 300 texts from Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt, dating from the 3rd century BC to the 7th century AD, which provide unique attestations regarding ancient medical knowledge and practice. Mostly literary treatises and technical texts, the medical papyri exhibit textual and paratextual features that differ from everyday documents. Next to many publications on the subject, the main outcome of the present project has therefore been the encoding of these texts and providing them open access, online digital editions (full list at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1B9yLyTo8GzSw-qKFtmHUi0PgdARycX5dIjFHvxHaNFc/edit?usp=sharing) flanked by an online lexicon of ancient medical technical terms as attested in the papyri themselves (“Medicalia Online”, see www.medicaliaonline.unipr.it). Not only have full text transcriptions of the papyri been provided, and embedded with commentary and translations, reflections stemming from this editing work has produced new ways of conceiving digital editions of ancient documents.
