A database and analysis of female-youth produced zines

Ziel

It is well known that women are misrepresented in mainstream media. In response, an increasing number of female youth around the world are creating their own media. However, this increase in cultural productivity has gone largely undetected so far and needs to be documented and analysed. The aim of the FEM-Zines database and analysis is to develop and maintain an interactive, online system to preserve, archive, and analyse female youth-produced media as well as to connect European and international state-of-the-art research on this subject. Providing access to and preserving cultural and scientific resources is one of the seven objectives of the Sixth Framework Program.

This interactive database and research platform will make female youth-produced media mo re accessible, establish a "living history" archive and provide the basis for further research. An analysis of the data collected will give us significant insights into the demographics and issues female youth are concerned with today. This 'basic research' is highly relevant to current debates about the role of cultural participation, production and creativity as means of combating social exclusion among disadvantaged citizens, in particular female youth, and the strengthening of a democratic society and media. Moreover, this research project specifically addresses girls' and young women's needs and contributes to an enhanced understanding of gender issues.
