Obiettivo
ATLAS is one of the experiments of the future accelerator LHC (Large Hadron Collider) at CERN, which is expected to start working in 2007. The project will be focused on the commissioning of the ATLAS Inner Detector reconstruction software in order to be fully functional for the first proton collisions and on the preparations for the physics analysis of the first data taken by the detector.
The commissioning will be done in different phases: cosmic rays at the surface with different Inner Detector setups, cosmic rays in the ATLAS cavern, single beam and first proton-proton collisions. The first phase will be essential for the consolidation of the reconstruction chain including the calibration and alignment procedures.
The events recorded in the following phases will be used to provide the first alignment and calibration constants. Concerning the physics analysis, the project has two objectives: first the development of b jet tagging algorithms optimal for high transverse momentum jets. And second, the study of the characteristics of the top quarks of high transverse momentum.
Thanks to the experience of the researcher in the Inner Detector reconstruction acquired as Marie Curie fellow at CERN and her expertise on b tagging and physics analysis from her DELPHI period, a group of experts on the objectives of this project can be formed in the host institute. At the same time, the possession of an individual project by the researcher will turn out to be crucial for the professional integration and long-tern jobs stability of the researcher.
In order to ensure the success of this project a close collaboration with the rest of the ATLAS groups is essential. In particular it is important to be in contact with the detector and data acquisition experts during the data taken periods and to participate in the different reconstruction software and physics analysis meetings.
