Deciphering the functional differences between Small Ubiquitin MOdifiers SUMO-1 and SUMO-2/3 pathways in normal and stress conditions

Ziel

Small Ubiquity-related Modifier (SUMO) is a member of a ubiquity-like protein family that regulates cellular functions of a variety of target proteins. Whereas yeast have a single SUMO, essential for life, mammals have three, SUMO-1, -2 and -3. Whether they are all required, have overlapping functions and can complement or replace each other is currently unknown. Moreover, while SUMO-1 has been extensively studied, little is known about its two close homologues SUMO-2 and SUMO-3. In particular, no specific substrate for these is forms has-been found so far. Nevertheless SUMO-2 and SUMO-3 exhibit specific and important characteristics, the main one being their increased conjugation in response to various stresses. The objective of the proposed activity at the "Max Planck Institute" in Munich, Germany, under the supervision of Dr. Franker Melcher, is to study the functional differences between SUMO-1 and SUMO-2/3 is forms in normal and stress conditions. Joining Dr. Franker Melcher’s group will give me a unique opportunity to acquire new skills, especially in biochemistry, and participate to the emergence of this new field of biology that is ubiquity and ubiquitin-likeregulation of biological processes. The expertise I will obtain with Dr Melcher will be vital for carrying out my future career as independent researcher.
