Objectif
The aim of POLYMOD is to strengthen public health decision making in Europe through the development, standardisation and application of mathematical, risk assessment and economic models of infectious diseases. The four objectives are: One: to make modellin g and economic analyses useful and pertinent to public health policy-makers, especially at the European level, by reviewing the determinants of policy-making in Europe. It will establish structures to enable policy-oriented researchers and modellers to de cide that pertinent public health questions are addressed and results are disseminated appropriately. Two: to improve the parameters and assumptions employed in mathematical and risk assessment models of infectious disease, and especially those relating to mixing patterns in contemporary European society. It is proposed to do this by conducting a person contact survey in a number of different European countries and utilising a number of data sources and techniques. Three: to predict the impact of control pr ogrammes against infectious diseases. Models will be developed to address a number of pressing public health issues (e.g. the likelihood of measles outbreaks in those countries with declining MMR coverage). Novel techniques will be developed for estimating outbreak size distributions, assessing dose-response relationships and estimating incidence for use in risk assessments models (e.g. food borne hazards and deliberate release of smallpox). Four: economic analyses to assess the cost-effectiveness of differ ent control programmes in Europe will be undertaken using the results from the models combined with cost and outcome data.
