Recycling of EAF dust by an integrated leach-grinding process (REDILP)

Ziel

Steel producers in Europe have maintained global competitiveness by using mini-mills with electric arc furnaces (EAF's) to make steel. However, during the recycling process, zinc and other non-ferrous metals, present in the scrap metal, as well as some of the iron, are "evaporated" forming dust particles. Increasing levels of zinc in scrap steel are forecasted due to the increased use of galvanized materials in automobile manufacture. Presently part of the steel works dust incurred is recycled in pyrometal lurgical processes, such as the waelz process. Problems faced include not only the high consumption of energy (issue of greenhouse gases emissions) and the remaining slag share of approx. 70 % but especially the risk of occurrence of dioxins and their envi ronmental impact. A high percentage of the dust is disposed of in landfills (waste of resources, waste disposal). The objective of this project is to develop a "cold" process to remove the heavy metals, as well as zinc lead oxide, from the dust und use th e remaining iron containing material as ingoing material for the blast furnace process. The innovation of the process is mainly based on the grinding activation during the leaching phase. Further advantages: Waste free process is targeted (saving resourc es) Optimised re-use of zinc, lead and iron oxide Climate protection by CO2-minimization reduction of greenhouse gases emissions No environmental risks through dioxins Step by step procedure: Lab scale tests manufacturing of a process prototype for the process evaluation However, earlier efforts in this direction (hydro metallurgical processes) have to date not been entirely successful, since the spinel structure of the dust ;)articles was not broken up and the iron oxide was thus not usable. A breakt hrough shall be made by a process consisting of simultaneous mechanical graining combined with a high selective leaching. First positive results were achieved in preliminary tests.
