Improving the competitiveness in the European frozen food industry through the development of new freezing equipment based on CO2

Objective

The overall objective of the project is increasing the competitiveness among SMEs in the frozen food industry by developing low temperature freezing equipment enabling the SMEs to increase the productivity.

The focus of this proposal will be held on the freezing process losing CO2 as a refrigerant in order to:
- Produce knowledge of the connection between the quick-freezing process and quality of the product using various types of freezers in order to control the process.
- Implement the developed knowledge in new freezing equipments that ensures better product quality at less operational costs.

By using CO2 a safe and environmentally friendly technique is introduced that protects the ozone layer as well as the global warming effects. Recent research programs focus on the performance of the CO2 installation itself. However, the benefits and consequences of using this refrigerant are not well-known or quantified. 10 organisations within the EC have formed a consortium aimed at carrying out the project.
