Sustainable production technologies of emission reduced light weight car concepts

Objective

SLC overall objective is to develop truly lightweight, multi-material concepts (parts, modules, car bodies made by the best materials selection) up to 50% lighter than present high-volume cars. This will only be possible by means of exploiting lightweight materials' combinations, developing joining technologies needed for reliable and efficient assembling and by filling the gaps on present design/simulation tools being not able to predict neither multi-material design reliability nor to assess affordability and sustainability. SLC Research & Development will address present limitations on advanced materials' processing, multi-material forming and joining technologies, design/simulation tools for series multi-material, lightweight car bodies. The SLC consortium includes experts from many FP4/5 and FP6 projects (and proposals) and national projects on manufacturing, lightweight materials, passive safety, noise reducing materials, vehicle assembly as well as rail-related technologies. SLC actively exchanges technologies with several sectors explicitly including rail. The multi-material concepts approach puts the overall vehicles functionalities' first and deploys them to sub-modules and parts, making the optimal material choice on a part-by-part basis based on overall vehicle performance. This is the driving force steering the research on the other areas. In parallel, advanced forming and joining technologies as well as multi-material capabilities of design and simulation tools are developed. After the first 2,5 - 3 years, technologies to be applied are selected and a lightweight front structure demonstrator is built up, which is virtually and physically verified.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
