Objectif
Based on the results of project 2315 (TWB I), the objective of the TWB II project is to produce a modular integrated set of tools containing extended multilingual text-processing facilities for six European languages (English, French, German, Greek, Italian and Spanish).
Applications are foreseen in the areas of publishing, translation and all kinds of text processing in foreign languages. The target hardware and software configuration is the MS-DOS PC with the graphical user interface MS Windows, in the sense that kernel components, especially the translation front-ends, will be developed for it. More complex or peripheral components will reside on server machines, so that networks consisting of DOS clients and Unix servers will form an extended TWB platform.
In the area of converters and communications, software will be provided for importing and exporting documents from different input formats (scanners, word-processors) into the workbench. The workbench will be enhanced with networking facilities for multi-user capability and remote access to distributed terminology via METAL.
Document preparation and post-processing will provide sophisticated editor enhancements for the integration of individual tools, including homogeneous proof-reading facilities for the six languages of the project. In addition, a multilingual character management system will ensure the correct presentation of the various character sets.
In the area of translation preparation, tools for preparing a text for translation will be developed. Identification of different sections between documents will serve to reduce the amount of translated text. The extraction of text-specific glossaries from large term-banks will ensure the controlled and standardised use of terminology for freelance translations. Work on translation tools will concentrate on a statistics-based translation memory trained for five languages in the area of business communication. Term-bank work will cover the integration of large terminological resources (including the full ISO terminology), as well as the implementation of new facilities including graphical information and quick data exchange.
Access to external data resources will be arranged by integrating dictionaries and terminological databases available on CD-ROM.
Evaluation and user tests form an integral part of the project. The application area is any field of text processing, given the increasing integration of Europe and the growing need for multilingual support facilities.
