DR HIPERGAS

Final Report Summary - DR HIPERGAS (DR HIPERGAS)

1. General:
• Aim of this project;
o Technical/Scientific: Investigate various possible ways to improve membrane performances to get high performance membrane (WP1: By Mixed Matrix Membrane (MMM), WP2: by improvement of substrate - WP2, and WP3: PolyElectrolyte Complex (PEC)), where in all 3 WPs investigation on stability under commercially relevant gas conditions will be investigated.
o Training of researchers under academic/industrial environment, with tailored unique training programs on both technical/industrial aspects, resulting in Ph.D. degrees with industrial experience.
• Partners: Fujifilm (NL) and Katholic University of Leuven (BE) as primary partners hosting researchers, and The Universität der Bundeswehr München (DE), TNO (NL) as secondary partners.

2. Main Results/Achievements on Technical Development:
• Various MMM membranes were made, several of which actually showed improvement of selectivity instead of improvement of flux, which is unique phenomena.
• Also parameters study were done to get thin layer composite membrane of MMM with nano-particles of Metal-Organic Framework (MOF).
• Characterization of investigated MMMs with PLEPS (Pulsed Low Energy Positron System), which reveled asymmetric distribution of MOF/Polymer mixture inside MMM.
• Detail parameter study was done for Poly Electrolyte Complex for gas separation membrane application, in which fundamental difficulty was identified for formation of high performance membrane.
• Stability investigation with natural gas field including H2S and H2O reveled that some of MOFs are not stabile under H2S/H2O containing gases even if it is dispersed in polymer matrix, which makes unsuitable for natural gas applications.

3. Main Results on Training of Researchers:
• Project Researchers have received unique training in both academic and also industrial partners, e.g. technical training (PLEPS workshop by The Universität der Bundeswehr München, Gas Separation Process Technology Workshop by SINTEF (NO)), and industrial trainings (IP training, Agile Project Management Training). Many of those training programs were opened also to external researchers.
• As a result, 1 Researcher have achieved enough results for Ph.D. (Thesis and Defense ongoing), and another researcher has shifted his interest in Industrial Engineering after industrial experience. Both 2 researchers has received position within international enterprises.
