International Collaboration on Integrated Photonics Technologies for Advanced Bioapplications

Final Report Summary - IPHOTO-BIO (International Collaboration on Integrated Photonics Technologies for Advanced Bioapplications)

The objectives of the ‘iPhoto-Bio’ project are to establish long-term stable research cooperation between the partner organisations with complementary expertise and challenges, to present a balanced mix between industrial application focused knowledge transfer and development and more far-looking studies for potentially groundbreaking application, to exploit new emerging opportunities with the integration of photonic components and systems, innovative nanomaterials, and ultrafast laser technology for the advanced applications in healthcare, biomedicine, food and environment sectors.

We have not only fully achieved the project’s objectives and technical goals but also have additional 20% research achievements beyond this figure.

For the 4-year project, over 23 ERs and ESRs have been seconded in total of 84.12 months to the partner organisations to carry out main research innovation activities, to exploit multidisciplinary research, to gain new skills through advanced training and knowledge transfer, to deliver the tasks allocated by work packages. Over 50% of the secondment and research activities are conducted by the early stage researcher.

During the 4-year project, we have captured 15 new grants totalling over 2M euro research funding awarded by the funding sources from the Europe, the United Kingdom, Spain, and China. New grants have reinforced the research network and collaborations between international organisations and provided the right funding of the research activities.

We have published 1 book chapter and 125 papers in peer-reviewed journals and at international conferences, filed 8 patents, and awarded 12 PhD/MSc degrees.

More than 10 workshops/summer school/science festival have been organised with ~ 2000 audiences, with strong impact to the young generation and young students. The 8 filed patents have demonstrated great applications for healthcare, biomedical engineering, food safety and environmental detection, indicating strong potential for future commercialisation.

The project iPhoto-Bio has generated knowledge and know-how for photonics based biosensors and micro-nano-bio systems. This research is of broad interest to the academic communities ranging from fundamental physics science and photonics technologies, but also to have a strong impact on the manufacturing industry. The established EU and non-EU collaborative links strongly impacted the proposed research. The developed new classes of photonic biosensors and bio-systems in this project also are of relevance and interest to other emerging applications including metrology, medicine, and secure communications. The project pushes forward the frontiers of knowledge in the core area of photonics reinforcing Europe’s leadership in this area. The project directs effort to spreading the excellence and disseminating results and it demonstrates a positive impact on the European photonics community.
