Environmental impact assessment

D6.3 Environmental impact assessment – FUGRO [M30, 37, 48] D6.3 will comprise analysis and interpretation of the monitoring conducted before, during and after the trials. This evidence base will be used to support recommendations for impact assessment of submerged mining of other enclosed inland open pit mines. This deliverable will also complement and inform deliverables D6.5: Policy Recommendations, and any relevant environmental components of D6.6: Future Research Roadmap.

Proof of environmental viability of the submerged mining concept

D5.5: Proof of environmental viability of the submerged mining concept – FUGRO [M46] D5.5 will provide the following measurements based on the first/both complete mining trial monitoring life cycle(s): 1. Pre-trial surface water and environmental measurements. Groundwater measurements will be taken from any available pre-existing and accessible boreholes with suitable historical datasets. 2. Post-trial surface water and environmental measurements. Groundwater measurements will be taken from any available pre-existing and accessible boreholes with suitable historical datasets. 3. Ranges of water quality within the water column during mining activities. 4. Measurements of pit water levels before, during and after trials.

Proof of operational viability of the submerged mining concept

D5.4: Proof of operational viability of the submerged mining concept – BMT [M34] D5.4 will provide the necessary confidence to encourage market uptake by giving 1. Verification that submerged cutting of hard rocks is feasible at industrial rates in a wide range of in situ mining conditions and that state of the art cutting equipment can cope with hyperbaric conditions 2. Verification that a submerged mining machine and HROV can navigate successfully underwater, in the dark, and follow a pre-determined mine plan, minimising turbidity and overcoming reflection problems from the pit walls – using state of the art sensory and perception systems 3. Verification that the changing survey data (changing mine face) can be captured and used to update a mine’s block model for planning and enable real time pilot/operator response 4. Verification that ore grade can be measured quickly enough to enable informed and timely mine scheduling decisions 5. Verification that the equipment can cope with a wide range of typi

D1.4 Sustainable Mining Forum and Advisory Board reports– DAM [M6, 12, 26, 38, 48] D1.4 will provide will provide consolidation reports on the views of the SMF and Advisory Board on project progress and potential impact on the mining community. It will also highlight recommendations regarding the activities to be undertaken during the meeting interval periods.

D5.6 Proof of financial viability of the submerged mining concept – MUL [M48] D5.6 will provide 1. An underwater productivity matrix or equation for a range of material types, operating depths and installed cutter power 2. Anticipated utilisation and availability figures 3. Energy cost ranges per tonne (again related to depth and material) 4. Wear cost ranges per tonne (again related to depth and material) 5. Capital cost information, machine life and operator/maintainer requirements extrapolated/scaled for a variety of machine sizes and pit sizes

D6.2: Accessibility and industrial viability – SMD [M24, 30, 37, 48] D6.2 will present the ¡VAMOS! response to the challenge of exploiting difficult to access minerals in a technically feasible and industrially viable way
