Imaging with Photon Counting: Reduced costs, increased dynamic range

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - PhotonCount (Imaging with Photon Counting: Reduced costs, increased dynamic range)

Periodo di rendicontazione: 2015-04-01 al 2016-03-31

The aim of the present project was to further develop a previously proven Photon Counting prototype built by our research group with the aim to:

Reduce production cost and extend technical specifications such as count rate, noise floor, and linearity (Activity 1)
Explore applicability to other detector types (Activity 2)
Integrate device in laser-scanning software (Activity 3)
Develop marketing strategy (Activity 4)

We have generated an improved, reduced size, reduced cost version of our initial photon counting prototype, that easy to use with existing PMT and avalanche photo-diode (APD) systems (activity 1 and 2). The noise performance has been further improved and the costs of production have been reduced 5-fold. The photon counter module has been integrated in our laser-scanning microscope software (DAQLab), and will be general applicable to Matlab-based open-source laser-scanning microscopy software (activity 3). We have identified several potential industrial partners that are system integrators in the field of imaging and microscopy. We are currently assembling several photon counting units to be sent out for testing by our industrial partners (activity 4).
