Update of BIORAISE GIS platform's information

As relevant stakeholders within the biomass sector will be considered the agroindustries (oil and nut companies), biomass and biofuel producers and suppliers, boiler and stove manufacturers, installers and ESCos. If the industrial production is not available, estimations will be made according accepted industrial conversion rates. Stakeholders data will be provided from the national market studies of the task 2.1 The integration of the information will be carried out following the methodology of BIORAISE, applying the market and environmental restrictions established in BIORAISE in order to estimate the available biomass from the potential resources and costs, as well as calculating the transport costs. All the participants will collaborate with CIEMAT in supplying, as mentioned, the national relevant data as well as giving suggestions of restriction factors to the use of biomass potentials in their respective countries that will be discussed with CIEMAT. TFS will perform software adaptations in order to introduce the new country datasets in the BIORAISE platform

BIOMASUD platform

During the BIOMASUD project an on-line platform http://trazabilidad.ciemat.es/ was developed to keep record of data related with batches and traceability (quantity, date of production, type of biomass, GHG emissions, etc.). The idea is to add some capabilities to the platform and keeping all the data about quality and sustainability in one database. The features that will be added to the BIOMASUD platform are: - New sustainability criteria defined in task 4.1. These criteria, to be defined during the project, will be designed to be evaluated within the new platform. - The GHG calculation tool developed in task 4.2. will be included in the platform to calculate the GHG emissions along the supply chain. - The energy balance will be included in the platform to calculate the energy balance along the supply chain - Currently some information is available to the final consumer as the ability to calculate GHG emissions and energy balance until the home of the final user by introducing the postal code and the batch number. Also it’s possible to find information about biomass companies thanks to the database completed in WP2 and BIORAISE. It will be studied which of the new information about the certified companies is possible to published without publishing sensible information (for example, not publishing individual data of GHG emissions of one company but averages of one country of GHG emissions or energy balances,

Report of the selection of the BIOMASUD biofuels for combustion tests

A selection of the biofuels to be considered for combustion tests will be made among the biofuels that will be finally enclosed within the improved BIOMASUD label. Olive stones, a recognized widely used residential heating biofuel in most of the Mediterranean countries, and two other fuels will be selected for the combustion studies by CIEMAT in collaboration to BIOS, CERTH, CBE, taking into account the results of the national market studies of WP2. Two different quality classes of one biofuel might be selected for study

Quality classification of the solid biofuels to be considered in the biofuels extended BIOMASUD label

A quality classification “pre-standard” for each of the selected solid biofuels in Task 3.1 and not included in any quality standard will be developed by BIOS in deep collaboration with CERTH, CIEMAT and CBE, having into account, among other criteria: • The characterization results and quality assessment performed in task 3.1. • The requirements and classes of existing related quality standards (EN and ISO related standards)

Leaflet

Two project leaflets will be printed. (1 page, 500 copies for the first one and 1500 for the second one per language, Italian, Greek, Portuguese, Slovenian, Turkish, Croatian and Spanish, also as pdf) to serve as general and technical information material for all events organised during the project. It will be designed by AVEBIOM with the information of all partners. A digital version of the PDF will be uloaded on the WEB and send it to the stakeholders related and it's expected to rearch 3000 downloads / deliveries per country. In the first leaflet will attempt to capture the general objectives of the project and shall be addressed to the general public. The second leaflet will be developed with more technical information and will target stakeholders involved in the use and participate at the quality system. These leaflets are delivered in both general and technical events. After its design it will be distributed by AVEBIOM to the rest of the partners in order to translate it and print it. It will be ready by month 8 and 24

Final publishable report

A report with the main conclusions of the project

Selected list of biofuels and motivation

The selection will be led by CIEMAT in collaboration with BIOS, CERTH. and CBE, and the final agreement of selected biofuels of AVEBIOM, AIEL, TUBITAK, ZEZ and GIS.

Selected biofuels characterization results and quality assessment report

Initially, samples of the selected commercial solid biofuels will be collected in the different countries (maximum five non SUDOE countries for olive stones and dried fruit shells and seven countries for the rest of selected biofuels) by the corresponding national partners (AVEBIOM and CIEMAT will do this task jointly in Spain) and sent to the participant laboratories, according to the pre established samples distribution protocol. A total of at least ten samples of each biofuel will be collected per country. The samples will consist of biofuels in the market from different producers or, in the case sufficient different producers are not available, samples of the same producer but collected at different times (different production lots) will be considered. All the samples will be analysed, according to the corresponding EN (ISO) standard methods: humidity, ash and volatiles contents, elemental (C,H,N) analysis, chlorine and sulphur contents, calorific value, ash components (micro and micro elements) and ash melting point (CEN/TS 15370-1). Moreover, the CIEMAT will determine the sintering behaviour of all the samples according to a specially developed in- house method. This method is based on the determination of the fraction of biomass ashes preheated to 550°C under oxidising conditions which remains on a 0.25 mm sieve after specific sieving conditions. The ashes are previously produced by ashing the selected fuels in air atmosphere at different temperatures from 800º C to 1,400º C, with a heating slope of 3ºC/h. Aquality assessment for each biofuel will be then delivered by CIEMAT, according the results obtained in the described tests.

Consolidated handbook for BIOMASUD certification

A Handbook will put into force setting out the rules for the certification of the biofuels granted under the improved BIOMASUD label. It will be elaborated by AVEBIOM with the assessment and collaboration of all project partners, in particular CIEMAT. This Handbook will be based and will have the same structure of the present BIOMASUD label Handbook and will contain the description of quality requirements, the quality assurance (traceability) system procedure, and the sustainability requirements for solid biofuels granted by the label extended to the whole biofuels chains (from field to boiler). The Handbook will include the new biofuels studied in WP3, as well as the new and/or improved quality and sustainability label requirements defined in WP3 and WP4, respectively, and those relating the best conditions for solid biofuels use in commercial boilers and stoves (WP5). The Handbook will be elaborated in English and translated into the languages of the countries participating in the project (in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Greek, Slovenian, Croatian and Turkish), being responsible for the translation of the relevant project partner in each country. The Handbook shall be disseminated among the bioenergy stakeholders in each country. In direct relation to the Handbook, as an element for the implementation of the certification system will be the on-line application developed in task 4.3, for calculation of the sustainability requirements.

Roll up

One roll-up will be designed by AVEBIOM with the information of all partners in order to give visibility to the project in the events. After its design it will be distributed by AVEBIOM to the rest of the partners in order to translate it and print it. It will be ready by month 8

Technoeconomic analysis of the selected biofuels combustion

Using the inputs obtained from tasks 5.2 and 5.3 as well as the results of the market studies performed within task 2.1, BIOS will perform techno-economic evaluations regarding the utilisation of the selected biofuels in the tested stoves/boilers. The performance parameters and an evaluation of the economy of the whole system (e.g. investment and operation costs) will be compared with techno-economic performance data of state-of-the-art residential wood pellet as well as natural gas fired boilers. The main results of these studies will comprise conclusions regarding the suitability of the combustion equipment to comply with the efficiency and emission limits established in the existing relevant standards and legislation, the identification of technological improvements as well as conclusions regarding the economic competiveness of these appliances when utilising BIOMASUD fuels.

Guidelines for boilers and stoves manufacturers, installers and users

According the results obtained in Tasks 5.3 and 5.4 , guidelines for boiler and stove manufacturers, installers and users will be elaborated. These guidelines shall support manufacturers to further develop and optimize their technologies towards a more energy efficient low-emission operation with BIOMASUD fuels. Additionally they shall support installers and users with information about relevant quality criteria for appropriate boiler and stove selection and operation

Review of the Sustainability Criteria

A revision of new sustainability criteria to be included into the BIOMASUD scheme will be realized

Residential heating biofuels market state of the art report

The scope of the proposed study will basically comprise for each country: identification of the importance of the residential heating biofuels market in the context of the national energy demand and the bioenergy market, the biomass resources available for relevant biofuels production in each country, the residential heating biofuels production and biofuels use and market prices, the main biofuels chains description, the related legislation and market support measures and relevant information of the most representative national market stakeholders. The public acceptance of the studied biofuels will also be addressed. The market studies will be developed by the partners AIEL, TUBITAK, CERTH, ZEZ and GIS, for Italy, Turkey, Greece, Croatia and Slovenia, respectively. CBE will carry out the market study for Portugal and AVEBIOM and CIEMAT jointly, for Spain. AVEBIOM and CIEMAT will jointly elaborate the templates of the questionnaires for the rest partners to collect the required information.

Report of the State of the art of combustion devices for the selected biofuels

A review of the manufacturers of commercial combustion equipment (stoves and boilers) presently existing on the market providing certified designs for the use of Mediterranean biofuels will be made. A description of the stoves and boilers, capacity ranges, technologies and components used, relevant design characteristics and operation conditions, biofuels and biofuel requirements, and certified efficiency and emission data as well as costs will be compiled.

Results of the combustion test campaigns

Results of the tests (equipment efficiency, common protocols, ash behaviour and emissions)performed by BIOS, CIEMAT and CERTH at laboratory test stands under well controlled conditions and utilizing common procedures,. One stove and one boiler, selected based on the survey performed within Task 5.2, will be monitored at each of the cited participants with the biofuels selected in task 5.1. The estimated capacity range of the stoves will be up to 10 kWth and of the boilers between 20 and 120 kWth. BIOS with the support of CIEMAT will be in charge of the elaboration of common testing protocols as well as procedures for result collection, evaluation and reporting. CIEMAT will provide the standardized biofuels to all testing sites, according to new BIOMASUD quality requirement standards defined in WP3. Two types of combustion tests will be performed: a) Combustion tests at nominal (100%) and partial (30%) load. . b) Load cycle combustion tests. This is an innovative methodology developed to determine the efficiency and emissions of a boiler/stove under real-life operation conditions which are simulated in laboratory. Thus, it allows determining the annual utilization rates of the stoves/boilers, as requested by the Eco-design Directive, without the necessity to carry out complex and long term measurements at field installations.

Residential solid biofuels stakeholders list and description

a list of stakeholders within the biomass sector will be considered the agroindustries (oil and nut companies), biomass and biofuel producers and suppliers, boiler and stove manufacturers, installers and ESCos. If the industrial production is not available, estimations will be made according accepted industrial conversion rates. Stakeholders data will be provided from the national market studies of the task 2.1

Residential heating solid biofuels market Roadmaps

a Roadmap identifying measures/actions to be implemented in order to develop the sustainable solid biofuels market of the most relevant residential heating biofuels in each of the Mediterranean countries participating in the project consortium will be developed. An integrated Roadmap for all the countries will also be carried out.

Report of the evaluation and validation of sustainability and traceability tools

The partners responsible for the BIOMASUD certification in all countries will have to use the BIOMASUD sustainability and traceability tools developed in WP4 to pilot biofuel producers and / or traders to whom the label will be granted in Task 6.3. This pilot exercise will be also used in order to validate and, when necessary, to improve/ adapt the tools to the different pilot cases that can be observed. In this deliverable, a report with the results of the evaluation and validation of the sustainability and traceability tools will be elaborated
