Review of exsisting studies reporting the relationship between plant traits and ecosystem functional properties, with a specific focus on the photosynthetic process. The deliverable will be in the form of a review document.

Review of up-scaling techniques to produce maps of PTs, EBVs and EFPs from remote sensing data.

A technical report will review vegetation structural and biophysical parameters that can be retrieved from RS at different spatial scales. Methods proposed in the literature/international programs will be analyzed and standardized protocols will be proposed including temporal and spatial sampling design, data collection, instrumentation, etc.

Report of the current and foreseen satellite data available for the proposed methodology (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)

A report will review the satellite data best suited to estimate PTs EBVs, and inferring EFPs within the range of currently available instruments with a view on those data that will be made available in the near future. Advantages and potential limitations of the currently available data will be highlighted to provide advices to space agencies (e.g. ESA) on data gaps that should be filled. Synergies between sensors will be analyzed.

Standardized protocol for UAV data acquisition (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)

A standardized protocol will describe how to perform UAV data acquisition in order to get the best quality data and to ease the image processing.

Publication of research results (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)

At least three papers on high impact journal and open source refereed journal are foreseen for each ESR. Publication of the research results to large audience science journals (e.g. Wired magazine) are also expected.

Review on the potential biophysical and biogeochemical predictors of PTs, or EBV, and EFPs (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)

A review of the effects of biophysical and biogeochemical predictors (e.g. nutrient availability, topography, ecosystem structure or soil properties) on PTs and EFPs, investigated through different field experiment, will be described and documented in a review report or scientific publication.

Evaluation of the uncertainty of EBV and EFP maps (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)

The uncertainty study will include: (1) uncertainty of satellite sensor data, (2) natural variability within EBVs and EFPs and (3)  uncertainty in the retrieval algorithms. The deliverable will be an algorithm under GNU licence (open for general public, using the medium GitHub, or similar ones).

Each ESR with her/his personal supervisor(s) in the host organisation/s will report on the research and training activities and results achieved, including the publication of results in scientific and divulgative journals, the edition of books and booklets, standardized measurement protocols, software development and in the case of private companies, the development of commercial products, in order to update the dissemination plan accordingly.

An handbook for training highly-skilled young researchers in remote sensing technologies, ecosystem modelling, big data anlaysis and fusion will be written through the training material collected during the training programme.

Each ESR with her/his personal supervisor(s) in the host organisation/s will report on the research and training activities and results achieved, including the publication of results in scientific and divulgative journals, the edition of books and booklets, standardized measurement protocols, software development and in the case of private companies, the development of commercial products, in order to update the dissemination plan accordingly.

Presentation and demonstration to open science events (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)

TRuStEE will be involved in scientific initiatives organized to bring science to a large audience. The beneficiaries will take part to science open science initiative presenting appealing new technologies such as drones, laser scanning, thermal images are appealing for people at all age. The coordinator (UNIMIB) has been part of the organization of the European Night of Researchers in Milano since 2013, and since then has also participated to the Wired Next Fest organized by WIRED in Milano. The other participants have been involved in different science social events through their institutions, e.g. the European Night of Researchers (CSIC, MPG), ‘science in the square’ (UNEXE). Furthermore, Media (local TV and/or radio, newspaper) will be involved during the summer school, particularly during the field campaign, in order to show data acquisition with innovative instrumentation. Finally, ESR will be asked to prepare a final presentation in the form of a TED conference, that will be uploaded in the dissemination section on the TRuStEE website.

Presentation at technical workshop and international conference are foreseen during the all lifetime of the project by the ESR and by the beneficiary members.

The supervisory board will coordinate the strategy for the recruitment. The advertisements of the available positions will be sent to most important academic, research centres institution as well as published on ITN webpage, MSCA website and web page of the host institutions, the EURAXESS Job Portal, the European Network of Mobility Centres and advertisements at scientific meetings.

All the ESRs recruited will award a PhD title within the project lifetime.

Development of methodologies for the upscaling of EFP, EBV, and PT based on the activity of the D3.6 and D4.2. Analysis of the spatial variability of the results and uncertainty.

Procedure for the in-flight definition of the flight plan for multi-rotor UAV (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)

The UAV sistem is ready (platform, payload and acquisistion protocol): the light-weighted hyperspectral instrument is mounted on the platform, the procedure for the in-flight definition of the flight plan is operational and the standardized protocol for data acquisition is defined. The first data are collected on field.

Different measurement modes (ground based spectrometer, UAV point spectrometer, LIFT data and HyPlant images) are spatially registered and the relation between the different fluorescence measurement modes are analyzed analytically.

Development of time series analysis methodology in an open source environment to decompose time series of hyperspectral data or vegetation indices at daily, seasonal and, if possible interannual time scale.

Open source softwares for the extraction of EFPs from FLUXNET data (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)

Open source software to derive physiological parameters and ecosystem functional properties such as light use efficiency, water use efficiency from eddy covariance flux data. The development will be focused on the FLUXNET sites with open policy.

Software tool for processing UAV and airborne images (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)

Data from the UAV spectrometer will be used to adapt the spectral fitting method to retievel sun-induced fluorescence from the UAV borne hyperspectral data (D1.7). These data will be related to established ground based data and the accuracy of this new measurement mode will be quantified.

Model for the retrieval of PTs, EFPs and EBVs from satellite data assimilation techniques (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)

Open source software combining algorithms for the retrieval of vegetation characteristics (PTs), EFPs and EBVs from satellite sensors, including Sentinel 2 and Landsat 8. They will be published under GNU licence.

Development of a open source code for the prediction of plant traits and ecosystem functional properties related to the photosynthetic processes from multisource near-surface remote sensing data.

TRuSTee website will be designed and made. A downloaded area for the partner will be designed including an intranet area for sharing data among the partnership and an open area for public deliverables and for data exploitation. The website will be linked to the webGIS.

WebGIS design and implementation (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)

Field data and remotely sensed data collected during the field experiments planned in the summer schools will be stored and managed in a prototype WebGIS. The production of the WebGIS will allow to collect and share data among the network. The webGIS is also intended to show how remotely sensed data products (PT, EFP and EBV maps) may be easily exploited by end users through of simple technologies.
