Innovative biogas upgrading system based on novel Zeolite adsorbent technology for producing Bio-based Natural Gas

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - ZeoBio-NG (Innovative biogas upgrading system based on novel Zeolite adsorbent technology for producing Bio-based Natural Gas)

Berichtszeitraum: 2016-06-01 bis 2016-11-30

Biogas is mainly a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide gases produced from the breakdown of organic materials by bacteria anaerobically. Biogas offers the potential to substitute fossil fuels as an alternative source of energy for electricity and heating. The process of biogas upgrading (removal of carbon dioxide) has further economical values in producing biomethane as a clean and sustainable fuel for vehicles – As a transport fuel, biomethane can be sold by producers for approximately 4 times the price of electricity. While biogas is widely produced in Europe, high investment costs of current biogas upgrading technologies make it difficult for small-medium scale biogas producers to generate sufficient investment return from the biomethane produced.

The market business opportunity, as identified by NeoZeo is to provide small-medium biogas producers with a cost and operation efficient solution to upgrade their biogas to biomethane. The solution that NeoZeo offers is a biogas upgrading module developed from the seamless integration of existing and state-of-the-art biogas upgrading technologies. The module could upgrade biogas in small-medium biogas flowrates of 50-200Nm3/h, to produce high quality biomethane. The module has high efficiency, low energy requirement and significant lower costs that most of the available commercial products.

The overall objective of SME Instrument Phase 1 is for NeoZeo to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study to assess its innovative biogas upgrading technology, as well as to explore the market potential for the commercialization of the technology in different European countries.
Tasks performed in Phase 1 include comprehensive risk assessment; review of IP protection strategies; Market research into biogas production and upgrading business in Sweden, Latvia, Germany and Czech Republic; Active user engagement; as well as partner search for subsequent commercialisation plan. The results have shown that the project possess high technical and commercial competencies. The results have also shown strong favour of proceeding to deliver the product to the market, and hence apply for Phase 2 funding of H2020 SME Instrument to support the subsequent work plans.
NeoZeo predicts that market penetration, the after completion of project, will result in economic and social benefits through revenue generation and employment creation in Europe; as well as environmental benefits through significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.
