Edurio – a revolutionary web platform for school networks to improve the quality of education through deep analytics of stakeholder feedback

Periodic Reporting for period 4 - EDURIO (Edurio – a revolutionary web platform for school networks to improve the quality of education through deep analytics of stakeholder feedback)

Periodo di rendicontazione: 2019-04-01 al 2019-12-31

Managing the quality of education in a school network has till now depended more on guesswork than evidence due to the difficulties in collecting and interpreting quality assurance data across schools. In a time of fundamental shifts in the education industry and broadening technology access this is no longer acceptable.

Across Europe and beyond governments are focusing on continuously improving the quality of education. Improving the scores in PISA, the OECD’s test for student achievement, is a core part of education policy for most countries. Therefore governments are initiating major curriculum transformations and implementing improvement programmes in their school networks.

The basic aim of education is shifting globally to a competency-based model where student grades are no longer the only reliable indicator of success. This is seen across Europe and globally as the workplace no longer requires students to just master information but increasingly requires them to develop competencies and mind-sets. Currently these changes are implemented without being able to monitor what is working and what isn’t.

Stakeholder feedback is a critical part of evaluating quality and assessing impact of change but the current manual feedback practices give very little useful information to school network leaders and are a hassle to manage for everybody involved.

Edurio is developing the first web platform to help school networks (governments, municipalities or private) continuously improve the quality of education by collecting and analysing feedback from students, parents and teachers in an easy to use and insightful way. The project covers advanced prototyping, scale-up and market validation activities and will bring us to a wide market uptake across the EU and beyond. It will help us implement the full functionality for school network leaders and embed our deep analytics capability into the system.
Within this project we have been able to bring the Edurio platform to a whole different level. We have refactored the platform to enable rapid scale-up, as well as developed a number of functionalities that broaden the analytical capabilities of Edurio. For example, the platform now offers to benchmark results of a specific school to the average result of all schools that have undertaken the same survey. In addition, various features such as one-pager summary have been added to allow for platform users to receive a quick summary of survey results without the need to dive into all results analysis at once. Moreover, we have enabled rapid integration with a number of international school management systems to save time on user profile setup.

Together with the University College London Institute of Education we developed a large number of surveys tailored to the needs of schools. Each of those has also been validated with pilot schools. One of these surveys is the Staff retention survey which has gained tremendous results in the UK. It has become the biggest survey conducted on teacher retention across England and by the end of the project reached 20 000+ responses. Based on the results of this extensive pilot we launched a research report covering the main findings from this survey: https://home.edurio.com/retention-report.

Both technical and content improvements of the platform have been tested across more than 1000 schools from 3 continents and 8 countries. The extensive piloting and product validation provided astounding insights on how to shape Edurio offering that best matches the needs of schools. The piloting took place on various levels - from individual schools to school networks of 60+ schools to a national level via the Ministry of Education. We could not be more impressed with the reach ourselves.
The extensive piloting led to a great conversion rate validating the value of Edurio and has especially helped to establish our presence in the UK and Latvia.

Extensive communication and promotion has also taken place during this project through our participation in international education and education technology events such as the BETT Show in London, UK, SXSWedu in Austin, USA and many others. All these events allowed us to reach a much wider audience and public recognition than would have been otherwise possible.

Through this project we have developed a solid and valuable product, built a strong team and built a vigorous plan for further international development.
"During the project the Edurio platform has been developed to best fit school network requirements. This has included a number of technical innovations pushing it far ahead of the current state-of-art technologies available for the network leaders. Our system architecture uniquely enables multi-level distribution of insights (network leaders, school leaders, teachers) and automatic analytics that help non-data experts interpret the data without using additional analytics tools. These include flexible data matrices, time period comparison and filtering/benchmarking, never until now available in an integrated system for schools and school networks. We have also laid the groundwork for further analytic approaches by developing a reliability filter, custom respondent tagging and started work on improved methodologies for feedback collection.

The impact from this project has been material for improving education within Europe and beyond with over 1000 schools being able to learn from their students, parents and teachers, and improve the quality of education they provide.

“We have undertaken surveys internally until this year. The support offered to us by Edurio this year has taken our staff survey to a different level. We have been able to still use our previous data to benchmark but their software and platform has enabled us to take our analysis to a much higher level. In particular, the visual impact of the data analysis is outstanding. We look forward to working with them again in future years.” Chris Tweedale, CEO GEP Academies

""This is one of the best things we've done in terms of having real impact on learner outcomes and helping schools take improvement actions."" Dominic Norrish, COO United Learning

The project allowed us to reach more than 850 000 students, parents and teachers combined. Moreover, by the end of the project we managed to collect more than 23 million survey answers. The magnitude to which we have been able to test, validate and build our business in such a conservative market as education and in such a short amount of time would not have been possible without the Horizon 2020 project."
