Light weight, impact resistant, canopy for fast compound rotorcraft

Project description

Revolutionising high-speed aircraft canopies

In the realm of high-speed aircraft, one critical challenge has persisted for many years: the inadequacy of traditional canopy structures. These structures compromise aerodynamic performance and hinder visibility, creating a dangerous situation for pilots. With this in mind, the EU-funded FastCan project will address this issue by prioritising safety and efficiency. Specifically, it will deliver an economical and lightweight canopy structure that optimises aerodynamic drag and offers an unrivalled field of view. Compliant with CS 29 requirements for bird strike capabilities, this ground-breaking design is achieved through a one-shot manufacturing process, forming a hollow, single-piece carbon fibre reinforced polymer structure. Drawing on expertise from the automotive sector, particularly motorsport, FastCan will ensure knowledge transfer.

Objective

Design and manufacturing of an economical lightweight, safe and flight worthy canopy structure optimised for low aerodynamic drag, best field of view and in accordance with CS 29 requirements regarding bird strike capabilities for the high speed LifeRCraft.

Low weight design is intrinsically assured through the application of the innovative one-shot design of the canopy as a hollow single piece CFRP structure.

The chosen tooling concept allows the manufacturing of the prototype as well as a low series production.

Know how transfer from the automotive sector, mainly motorsport, is assured. The applicants have an excellent record in maintaining even the tightest schedules and delivering highest quality products on time and on budget.
