Indoor positioning systems (IPS) locate people or objects inside a building using radio waves, magnetic fields, acoustic signals, or other sensory information collected by a smartphone device or tablet. These systems are used to detect and track a position. Just like GPS, but for indoors. Unlike the global positioning system (GPS) used for outdoor location services that was conceived in the 1960s and became dominant by the early-2000s, it is expected that indoor positioning and location-based services will become ubiquitous over a much shorter period of time. There are many different types of systems available on the market today including Wi-Fi, Radio and Beacons, but all require hardware or the combination of multiple systems working together to locate a position indoors. Positioning accuracy varies greatly but can be increased at the expense of infrastructure equipment and installations.
Since its incorporation in Finland in 2012, IndoorAtlas created the world’s first ubiquitous indoor positioning cloud platform that leverages geomagnetic technology, The software-only IPS requires no large scale purchase, installation or maintenance of hardware to pinpoint a person’s location and company’s “blue dot” delivers 1-2 meters accuracy. What’s more, IndoorAtlas' technology can utilise other technologies, such as Wi-Fi, for even further optimisation.
The key ambition of this project is to scale-up and expand IndoorAtlas' concept into new geographical and sectoral markets by reaching to potential customers in new industrial verticals, educating and developing the market in the process, as well as enhancing global support and customer success. This 18 month project enables IndoorAtlas to reach new customer segments (Industrial verticals, asset tracking), expand geographical market presence in US and Europe, as well as build new capabilities (Global Online support) to the existing platform to better serve current PaaS customers. Besides, it shall also encourage significant scaling up and growth, namely by strengthening IPR portfolio, especially in US and Asia.
