EC-Asia Research Network on Integration of Global and Local Agri-Food Supply Chains Towards Sustainable Food Security

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - GOLF (EC-Asia Research Network on Integration of Global and Local Agri-Food Supply ChainsTowards Sustainable Food Security)

Berichtszeitraum: 2020-01-01 bis 2023-10-31

The research project brings together researchers from a number of disciplines to address a global challenge in achieving sustainability and resilience of agri-food production and supply chains. The multidisciplinary consortium consists expertise in agriculture economics, management science, biological science and biotechnology to support sustainable, circular economy development from twelve institutions in the UK, The Netherlands, Norway, China, Thailand and Vietnam. The research group are set up to form a strong platform for knowledge exchange to carry out the research.

The project aims to understand, evaluate and optimise integrated global and local systems to enhance sustainability in a broader circular economy perspective in the agri-food supply chain context.

The overall objectives of this research are:

- Develop an innovative methodology for assessing, designing and planning sustainable food supply chains considering local contexts;

- Identify and inform collaborative strategies for agri-food supply chains with the circular economy initiative;

- Develop tools for design and supporting implementation of sustainable and resilient agri-food systems with circular economy and bio economic solutions;

- Study the impact of global market demands and local culture of consumption needs on sustainability of local agri-food systems and global souring options.

The project is funded under the EC Horizon 2020 - the Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (2018 - 2023) with a total of 1.003M Euro.
The project GOLF started in Jan 2018 and completed in Oct 2023. It includes 12 participants - University of Liverpool, UK (Coordinator), Liverpool John Moore’s University, UK, Wageningen Unviersity, The Netherlands, Molde University College, Norway, University of Hull, UK, Nong Lam University, Vietnam, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, Zhejiang University, China, Global Biotechnology Transfer Foundation, UK, Dalian Maritime University, China, TVFood Ltd. Vietnam, Hoa Lam Co Ltd. Vietnam.

The project research activities have been conducted through 11 work packages for the tasks, including evaluation of agri-food supply chain performance and risk, developing tools for design and implement sustainable solutions, developing collaborative strategies and optimal agri-food supply chains for integrated local–global sourcing and distribution, identifying impacts of market demands on sustainable agri-food supply chains and developing solutions to waste reduction from the circular economy perspective.

The research has been facilitated by intensive research exchange of staff within the project consortium. The research exchange had greatly supported the research collaboration and generated new research directions in the sustainable food supply chain management. With benefits in knowledge sharing, capability building, extended research partner networks, and integrated research resources.

Overall, the following results have been achieved, connected to the project activities:
Fourteen case study reports were created through collaborative research during secondments. Research has been published in around 50 peer reviewed international journals and a large number of presented conference papers.
A large number of workshops and other relevant events have been organised or participated. These include keynote speech, presentation of the research, knowledge exchange, publicise project profile and outcomes to communities.
The topic of sustainability of agri-food supply chains aligns well with the overall strategic plan for the project academic participant HI Molde. This brings the sustainability-related research to the top of the institution’s research and education agenda. HI Molde’s new campus in the city of Kristiansund is becoming a major centre for research on the sustainability, logistics and economics of the biological sectors, in particular related to seafood. The project significantly facilitated the development of the new research centre for sustainability.

Collaborative research has been carrying out through the secondments with expertise from different areas at the hosting organisations. This includes bio-economics expertise at GBTF and its partners and the industrial participant TVFood. The new research area in integrated Agri-Aqua production approaches at ULIV have been developed into research impact project for continuous dissemination of the GOLF project research outcome. This research activity extend the GOLF research theme into an integrated agri-aqua food production area.

To expand the network for research on sustainable food supply chains, a Master teaching programme on food supply chain and logistics will be established at NLU with the help of other partners. UHULL is also in discussion about setting up a MoU with NLU to undertake staff / student exchange visits. Both partners will jointly organise an international conference The 5th International Conference on Sustainable Agriculture and Environment (SAE 2024), December 05 – 07, 2024.
