IMPROVEMENT OF MEANS OF CONTROL OF WARBLE-FLY IN CATTLE AND GOATS

Obiettivo

Warble-fly is a parasitic disease that causes major financial losses to stock breeding. An informal European Working Party was set up in 1979 to harmonise research. Over a series of meetings, this ad hoc Working Party compiled an economic statement on the incidence of the disease and drew up a map showing its prevalence in Europe. The various national warble-fly control programmes were then compared, which made it possible to identify reasons for their successes and failures.
The research project's aim is :
the definition of a precise evaluation method for the disease to assess the effectiveness of programmes designed to combat it and monitor further outbreaks ;
to improve knowledge of the mechanism whereby the parasite evades the host's defence system and how the host builds up resistance, the long-term objective being to heighten this resistance and develop a vaccine.
The more specific areas of co-operation to be developed under the COST project Working Party are as follows :
Improving methods for evaluating and diagnosing by immune-diagnosis and sampling plans ;
A mathematical model for the life-cycle of the warble fly (to put together an important prophylactic tool with the help of a biomedical expert.)
Studies on host-parasite relationships : It has been found that certain proteins produced by the cattle warble-fly contribute to inflammation in the host animal. What is necessary now is to define more clearly the possible interaction of these proteins with other defence mechanisms and in particular the more specific immune defence systems. In this way, COST 811 hopes to address some of the mechanisms involved in the immune deficiency effects noted in connection with this disease. The ways in which the host reacts must also be more clearly defined. The study of host-parasite relationships is also worth conducting on goat warble-fly.

Current status
The inaugural meeting of the Management Committee took place on 14 March 1991. During the first round the signatories of the MoU become actively involved in the programme of studies defined jointly at the annual workshops of the Management Committee of COST Action 811.
The COST Action 811 started a second round (1994-1997) following the decision of the Committee of Senior Officials at their meeting on 21 January 1994 in Brussels (B).
The co-operation between the different research groups in COST Action 811 is mainly directed to the following topics :
Harmonisation of methods and means of evaluating and controlling this disease ;
Joint discussion on a European approach for a programme to eradicate warble-fly ;
Drawing of prevalence maps of the disease and of its progression over time ;
Presentation of the control programmes introduced, their strengths, and the difficulties encountered ;
Collection and dissemination of basic data on the immunology, epidemiology, and chemotherapy of this disease ;
Definition of the studies needed to ensure the improvements of the means to control this disease, based on the fundamental research findings, and to test these new methods in the field.

Programma(i)

Programmi di finanziamento pluriennali che definiscono le priorità dell’UE in materia di ricerca e innovazione.

Argomento(i)

Invito a presentare proposte

Procedura per invitare i candidati a presentare proposte di progetti, con l’obiettivo di ricevere finanziamenti dall’UE.
