Debate Science! European Student Parliament

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - EUSP (Debate Science! European Student Parliament)

Berichtszeitraum: 2018-03-01 bis 2018-10-31

Wissenschaft im Dialog organised a European Student Parliament on scientific issues in conjunction with ESOF 2018 in Toulouse. The attendees were young people aged 16-19 years from 12 European cities in 10 countries. In a simulated parliament students investigated ‘The Future of Mobility’ which is a challenge for science and society. Student committees discussed aspects of this theme with researchers. They wrote resolutions, presented them in a parliamentary debate and delivered them to Commissioner Carlos Moedas.

The project represents a process of RRI where school students exchange ideas with researchers and policy makers. These stakeholders gain new insights into the views of young Europeans. In addition results are disseminated to experts in the fields of science education and outreach, allowing an exchange of ideas.
Young Europeans attending the parliament develop their interest in science studies and careers through discussions of science in the context of interesting and relevant societal challenges. Students enhance their skills in critical thinking through self-directed learning and debating. They are inspired by meeting role models who use scientific knowledge and methods in their work.
The project involves organising and running a European student parliament on 'The Future of Mobility' in conjunction with ESOF 2018. This event brings together students from across Europe to discuss scientific topics with scientists and policy makers. In Toulouse over 70 students from 10 countries across Europe came together to debate science.

The results of the student parliament is communicated to a broad audience via online and traditional media to stimulate their interest and awareness of science in society. The students’ resolutions are also disseminated to relevant stakeholders, including scientists and policy makers.
Debate Science! European Student Parliaments develops students’ knowledge of science and scientific processes and their skills in critical thinking, problem solving and communication. It stimulates their interest in scientific studies and careers by demonstrating the role of science in addressing societal challenges and allowing them to meet scientist role models face-to-face. The event will contributes to the RRI process by stimulating an exchange between students, scientists from academia and industry and policy makers about science and societal challenges.
