In the food, beauty, home and pharma industries, consumers are demanding products that last more, are better preserved and have fewer preservatives. According to FAO, one-third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year gets lost or wasted, and 30% of losses happen at the consumer level. Moreover, 26% of the waste at households and food services have to do with packaged, non-perishable food, mainly food that has not been consumed on time. Regarding preservatives, it has been widely documented its harming impact on health. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that consumption of some kinds of preservatives may be linked to an increased risk of cancers, asthma, allergies, heart disease, et al.
Airless packaging technology is a feasible solution to a largely unsolved problem: preserving liquid food, cosmetic, pharma, and chemical products after the package has been opened. However, currently, airless packaging solutions are almost constrained in the cosmetics and healthcare industries.
IVS is an airless packaging solution based on a hermetic patented sealing system for flexible liquid packaging. IVS has all the valuable benefits of airless packaging but it has two further key benefits that may turn it into a breakthrough solution in the market; very low price per unit and low total cost of adoption. In addition, due to its innovation it offers better characteristics than the materials present in the market can be implemented to many packages thank you to its broad application.

During the project several tasks have been carried out in order to ensure the technical and commercial viability of IVS technology. The first task has been a product feasibility study, that has allowed us to ensure the reliability of the product, achieving meetings with our potential customers and pilot tests to improve and correct errors that have appeared in the implementation of the product. The second task was a market analysis, by conducting interviews with relevant market players present throughout the value chain of both target markets. The aim was to find out the needs of these players, as well as their impressions of the sector, so we can adjust the product to the needs of the market. Finally, an IPR and Legal Framework analysis has been made with the objective of meet the requirements and protect the intellectual property generated by the project. All these analyses have been condensed into a business plan that contains all the necessary steps to bring the business to a successful conclusion.
Also, it is foreseen during Phase 2 to carry out a product optimisation in order to obtain a precise determination of IVS’s potential target segments, levels of viscosity where IVS is efficient, in which cases there is a risk of bacterial contamination, validation and accurate quantification of the expiration date after the opening of products when is used IVS and which preservatives can be reduced or completely eliminated by using IVS. Within this process a more specific IRP & Regulations analysis will be carried out, adapting the conclusions to the product. The other main objective is to adapt the product to the specific needs of the market by carrying out pilot tests in real environments. With this we seek to create different versions of IVS adapted to the needs of each of the applications studied. The final objective of this is to exploit the developed product developing and scalable and repeatable sales model and revenue plan and disseminate it promoting the project and its findings during the period of the grant, engaging potential buyers and stakeholders.

In recent times, society has become more and more demanding with the products they consume and has become aware of the environment. They are looking for products that are more natural, durable and without the risk of contamination. Currently, in the market there are airless packaging, but only focus on pharmaceutical and cosmetics industry due to the high price of these containers.
However, thanks to the IVS solution, with very low price per unit and low total cost of adoption, is expected that the packaging sector will be revolutionised, with airless packaging having access to the global packaging market. IVS preserves the quality and efficiency of the products and extends the life of the product by an order of magnitude, giving the consumer much more time and freedom to consume it.
This is why, this project is a breakthrough since it allows to enjoy the advantages of the airless packaging without having to suffer its disadvantages, since it is a product simple to apply and manipulate and that also has better characteristics than those currently on the market.
