Service Platform to Host and SharE REsidential data

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - SPHERE (Service Platform to Host and SharE REsidential data)

Periodo di rendicontazione: 2020-05-01 al 2021-10-31

SPHERE is a 4-year H2020 project that aims to provide a BIM-based Digital Twin Platform to optimise the building lifecycle, reduce costs and improve energy efficiency in residential buildings. SPHERE aims to provide a set of tools/services integrated in a platform based on BIM models facing construction projects (both refurbishment and new construction actions) which will in turn help achieve a reduction of both European building sector's construction and operation energy efficiency, reducing overall CO2 emissions as well as costs. This is a critical issue in order to achieve European objectives regarding GHG emissions reductions for 2030-50. SHERE platform will, in a nutshell, develop and provide the following:
- A Platform as a Service (PaaS): An underlying ICT Systems of Systems infrastructure based on PaaS service to allow large scale data, information and knowledge integration and synchronization.
- Vertical integrated processes: During any phase of the building’s lifecycle, different stakeholders will be able to interact with this BIM Digital Twin model, based on the building’s information and a scalable set of different software tools.
- Building specifications and Real Time data: Seamless and efficient updating based on IDDS framework, where any action can be analysed in a virtual environment prior to physical implementation and consequent expenses.
- User Centered Design (UCD): To accelerate market uptake & social acceptance in order to help promote standards and policy that paves the way for a more extended use of ICT-tools in Building design, construction and operations.
- Integration into a Digital Twin Environment (DTE): Twinning this virtual information model with the reality helps significantly in decision-making during each phase of the whole building’s lifespan, increases collaboration and reduces inefficiencies, while improving the energy efficiency and reducing time and costs.
WP2 work was completed during period (M01-18) including the functional requirements for the SPHERE platform (T2.1) the KPI evaluation (T2.2) and tool identification with SPHERE required modules and user stories, with the agile requirements XWIKI (T2.3) and the user centred design methodologies (T2.4). The works formed the basis for the (T3.1) Digital Twin requirements and architecture development (T3.2) and the platform implementation (T3.4).

WP3 works included activities for the WP3 and also responses to a termination of VRM’s participation in the SPHERE project. A brief summary for the works carried out in the 2nd period on the work-package is presented. During the period, the primary topics being developed were: revised IT architecture included to all reports and process support for tool developers on SPHERE platform integration (Interface Agreement process) and developing API to enable SPHERE ecosystem. To foster the integration, work package organised a series of 6 events on Interface Agreements to support partners in specification work: template, user story, necessary activity and data flow diagrams.

WP4 was finalised in the second period of the project (M19 to M36) including submission of all five work-package deliverables and achievement of the two work-package milestones. The objective of the work-package was to evolve the software tools utilised in the SPHERE project for the design and construction phase in the building life cycle.

WP5 had developed, tested and implemented the tools required by the Digital Twin team for their on site activities during the building operation phase. The work package combines energy management protocols, predicitive maintenance tools and live or so called near-live IoT data tools from partners (SPHERE Services).

Under WP6, SPHERE DTE and its tools have been tested and validated in 4 buildings including residential and offices buildings moving along different phases of their lifespan.

In WP7 during the reporting period ending in M36, a first list of exploitable results (ERs) of the project has been identified and analysed, with specific information exchanges between R2M and all the partners involved in each ER, using a proper template. Comprehensive PESTEL and market analysis were completed by R2M with the feedbacks and contributions of all the partners:

WP8 has continued with the Dissemination & Communication plan (D8.2) the creation of the SPHERE Dissemination Network (D8.1) establishing efficient Communication & Dissemination materials and activities (D8.3 D8.4 D8.5) the implementation and management of IPR related matters (D8.6) supporting partners in their specific communication and dissemination needs and promoting an exploitation-oriented dissemination to ensure maximum impact, which special emphasis on SPHERE’s “Digital Twin Definitions for Buildings” White Paper both in English and Spanish version and the newly written “Building Digital Twins, simulation technical insight”.
Through these developments, SPHERE aims to achieve three overaching objectives within the building sector:
- 25% reduction in construction time
- 15% less energy demand during operational phase
- 25% less CO2 and GHG emissions in buildings
This will be achieved by aiming at several specific technical objectives:
- STO-01: Development & Integration of the Digital Twin System of Systems Architecture and Ontology and its releated process and stakeholders.
- STO-02: To integrate circular economy criteria into de decision taking process (including manufacturing).
- STO-03: Deelopment & integration of Technology System Applications to integrate Design & construction phases and smart tenders.
- STO-04: Development & Integration of Technology System Applications for the Operationl ^hase in Digital Twin Instances.
- STO-05: To demonstrate the Digital Twin Environment and its technologies and tools by deploying SPHERE’s PaaS and SaaS Apps (tools) into the renovation operations of our Pilot Residential Buildings in 3 different climate zones.
- STO-06: Scalability & Replication: to use project activities as a vehicle to attain the maximum post-project uptake of the project foreground and impact on the widest possible audience of EU worker and contractors, construction professionals & the general public.
Finally, SPHERE Project will implement all this within 4 different Demonstration Sites accross 4 different European countries: 2 new buildings and 2 renovation residential buildings in Finland, Austria, Italy and Netherlands, aiming at the following impacts:
Impact 1 – Buildings shortened construction time by 25% compared to current State of the art
Impact 2 – Construction cost reductions of at least 15% compared to current situation
Impact 3 – Reduction of the gap between predicted and actual energy consumption
Impact 4 – Reduction of CO2 by up to 25% of total life-cycle
Impact 5 – Improved indoor environment
Impact 6 – Significantly improved integration of the value chain
Impact 7 – Contribution to new standards and regulations
Impact 8 – Demonstration of large scale replicability potential
Social impact, jobs and training: the impact of SPHERE technologies is twofold: firstly, by bringing to the users, solutions such SPHERE that were out of reach for technical reasons and complexity will be brought closer to the final user which in turns, by its use, gets better training in energy efficiency. Secondly, by improving the quality of life of the inhabitants by providing much needed indoor environmental quality improvement.
