Innovative Platform for horizontal collaboration in Road freight transportation

Project description

Innovative system improves road freight transports

According to studies, up to 50 % of road freight trucks drive empty or partially empty leading to economic losses equal to EUR 160 billion per year, high emission of pollutants and increased traffic congestion. The European road transport sector needs to be competitive, efficient and faster to allow for 24/7 deliveries. Logistics service providers (LSPs) seek to optimise efficiency and lower costs. The EU-funded WeShare project proposes a collaboration model supported by an adaptable transportation management system that enables LSPs to share their data. The solution will optimise riding and loading operations among shippers, ensure optimal truck use without compromising their data, guarantee savings for LSPs and shippers, and reduce costs and CO2 emissions.

Objective

Several studies have shown that up to 50% of road freight trucks drive empty or partially empty, and depending on sector and geography, these numbers can be higher. According to EU, this leads to an economical waste of €160 billion per year. The above worsens more the situation of the European road transport which must also face the low prices and operating margins and the demand of shippers (parties that order transportation services) for higher efficiency through shorter lead times and 24/7 delivery, which results to even more empty truck kilometres, pointless emission of pollutants and extra traffic congestion. For that reason, Logistic Services Providers (LSPs) are actively looking for ways to optimize efficiency and their lowering costs.

WeShare platform introduces a collaboration model supported by an adaptable Transportation Management Systems (TMS) that allows LSPs share its data in order to perform cross optimization of riding and loading operations among shippers, ensuring their optimal trucks’ use without compromising their data. We achieve: 1) Savings of 2.5% and 7.5% of average cost index for LSPs and shippers respectively, 2) Reduction up to 87.5 million road freight km translated to a cost reduction of up to 67.500 tons of CO2 emissions.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

SME-1 - SME instrument phase 1

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
