Project description
Algorithms to reduce insufficiencies in online media
The rise of online media created the expectation of more democratic and diverse information and of a real public debate. However, the spread of online media and of social media in particular revealed that its effects instead of promoting diversity established silos and created polarisation. Observers noted that users tend to follow those media that support their views, avoiding contact with those promoting conflicting views. As a result, net citizens tend to reinforce their existing beliefs and opinions instead of considering all views. The EU-funded REBOUND project will develop theoretical schemes and a specific set of algorithmic techniques to inquire about insufficiencies in online media. The project aims to propose new methods that will support diversity in online media.
