Sintesi del contesto e degli obiettivi generali del progetto

Following 200 years of electrical innovation since Faraday, it remains easier to balance energy supply using fossil-fuel generation than to store a surplus from renewable sources and to manage an energy system lacking inertia.

In a sustainable future, storage will be used to minimise the need for generating assets, whilst balancing the intermittent nature of a grid powered by 100% renewable energy sources. Teraloop directly addresses the European Green Deal with an innovatively configured system for efficient storage with a minimized visual and environmental footprint, which will reduce reliance on Li-IIon batteries in the future energy storage mix.

It can be suitable for a range of applications including: EV ultra-fast charging support, island- and micro-grid support, voltage support, frequency regulation, peak shaving, distribution network upgrade deferral, grid inertia and congestion relief. It therefore provides an enabling technology for the energy transition which will help generators and users of energy to benefit from renewable energy without suffering loss from intermittency of supply.

The objective of the project is to demonstrate Teraloop's prototyped technology in an industrial pilot, as a companion technology to batteries, making them work better and last longer.

During the project, Teraloop has completed a pilot device design, manufacture, assembly, test and evaluation and also continued to develop its commercialisation strategy, agreeing technical specifications with customers and determining price points for systems of varying capacity and function.

Teraloop is now deploying a pilot system at a virtual power plant with Siemens and Sello Shopping Mall (Finland). The 6-month pilot programme is intended to demonstrate an extended battery service life and increased revenues through participation in a frequency containment market. Following validation of the flywheel functionality and benefits, Teraloop expects to form commercial agreements with clients in 2022.

Teraloop EES will provide the following key benefits, solving actual energy problems throughout the value chain:
1) generating savings on: industrial energy costs, down-time, battery replacement;
2) providing a reliable, high-quality energy supply for electric vehicle fast charging and low-quality microgrids;
3) fostering higher energy equality (by facilitating higher penetration of renewables);
4) high power density of up to 1MW per square metre, to make the most effective use of space;
5) sustainable materials and processes used in order to minimise footprint and maximise handprint

Teraloop's technology comprises a flywheel which may be scaled larger than current commercial devices; by the end of the project, it has been able to activate a pilot programme to demonstrate the economic benefits to energy users, and is configured to have lower environmental impact and risk to human health than competing technologies.
