Optimisation of TPB 1st phase reactor using improved pre-treatment processes

ESR3 will assess and optimise TPB-1st phase reactor configurations using the optimised pre-treatment processes (D1.6), at both lab- (DTU) and pilot-scale (SE) with a view to increasing LA-, AA (protein proteolysis) and mannitol (seaweed) production, while decreasing by-product formation via natural fermentation.

Novel process for bio-SA production from pressed grass/seaweed

ESR5 will develop and validating at labscale an efficient conversion process to produce bioSA from gaseous CO2rich streams and sugarrich hydrolysates produced from pressed grass and seaweed using the Actinobacillus succinogenes 130Z fermentative microorganism However to be able to produce BioSA from TPB outputs low quality biogas differing organic carbon sources ESR5 will also screen for a more robust and stable industrial microorganism

Downstream D-LA and BA biosensor creation

ESR1 will expand the biosensor array to include BA and D-LA downstream biosensors, which will be used to assess the concentrations of BA, L-LA and D-LA in effluent exiting the TPB-3rd phase.

Assessment of TPB-3rd phase adaption to alternative input substrates

ESR4 will work with ESR3, 5 and 7 to assess the adaptability of the TPB-3rd phase reactor for use with alternative input substrates by comparing pressed fresh and ensiled seaweed leachates with that of TPB-1st phase ensiled seaweed-fed leachates.

Improved microbial fermentative for increased LA, AA and carbohydrate production

ESR3 will assess additional biomass (grasss, seaweed) pre-treatment and fermentation techniques, for their ability to increase LA-, AA (protein proteolysis) and mannitol (seaweed) production while decreasing by-product formation via natural fermentation.

Optimised real-world seaweed ensiling process established

ESR7 will optimise the ensiling processes both at lab and pilot scale, to ensure that the ensiling process is applicable to the volumes that will be encountered in real world scenarios.

All WP1 participants will contribute to a stateoftheart AD and biorefinery technology report

Sustainable AgRefine Business Models

ESR14 will deliver a report describing and justifying the financial sustainability of business models that have been developed through a combination of scenario modelling, case studies and impact assessments.

Downstream processing strategy + Process simulation model

ESR4 will develop a process simulation model for the whole downstream process design (TPB-3rd phase) where grass-silage fed-1st phase TPB leachates will be compared to that of the current pressed system. The model will be used to clarify material balances, estimate the demand for chemicals cleaning agents and energy and thus identify preferential designs. The process simulation will be continuously adjusted as a mechanism to assess the effectiveness of optimising technologies that have been developed within WP1.

Report on optimal concentration and purity of acids

ESR 11 will produce a report on product purity and cost of purification of the ASPEN simulations, with that of the respective contaminant removal process, the Green Biorefinery process and the bio-SA production process

Nutrient recovery product assessment

ESR 9 will produce a report on nitrogen and phospohorous recovery as well as rrecovery and re-use of macro- and micro nutrients from the perspective of crop specific requirements

Technology integration and product separation optimisation

ESR4 will continuously optimise their process simulation using results obtained from all other tasks within WP1 and will incorporate relevant ASPEN generated purification strategies (ESR 11 Task 2.4) to produce an optimised lab-scale TPB-3rd-phase-separation-strategy (LAsa; ultrafiltration, nanofiltration/electrodialytic. AAs; chromatographic- and/or nanofiltration)

Geometry and CFD results for AD-retrofit and TPB-up-scaling

ESR 10 will disseminate an open source CFD toolbox for the flow investigation of the TPB systems.

ESR 8 will produce a report on technical specifications and guidelines for resource management to be used by companies to formulate valorisation processes and circular business models.
