Integrated Pest Management of the invasive Japanese Beetle, Popillia japonica

Project description

New app to monitor Japanese beetle invasion in Europe

The Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica), one of North America’s most invasive insects, is a major threat for hundreds of plant species. This severe pest of agriculture, horticulture, turf and landscapes is also posing a risk to plant health in Europe. Introduced accidentally to mainland Europe in 2014, it can relocate rapidly and establish itself under a wide range of different climates. The EU-funded IPM-Popillia project will deliver fast and reliable monitoring instruments and an app-based citizen science tool to maximise public engagement and awareness of the invasive pest. An environmentally friendly IPM-Toolbox will provide methods to control Japanese beetles in the infested zone and at the rim of its current expansion.
