Food Nutrition Security Cloud

Periodic Reporting for period 3 - FNS-Cloud (Food Nutrition Security Cloud)

The food and nutrition security (FNS) domain relies on fragmented data sources, tools and services. Most FNS data are not FAIR and essential matching and merging prior to use is highly labour-intensive. Innovative technological advancements are urgently needed to address inequalities in data access, increasing complexity and the exponential data growth. To this end, the aim of FNS-Cloud was to launch a first-generation cloud solution, federating existing and emerging datasets, which would demonstrate how fragmentation might be overcome. To showcase progress, tools and services were refined or developed, resulting in seven demonstrators in three broad areas (agrifood, intake and lifestyle, non-communicable disease [NCDs]and healthy diets). Agri-Food included three fields of interest, i) food traceability and search engine for agri-food chains, ii) food labelling data and reformulation, and iii) total diet studies risk assessment, composed of MCRA for professionals and a visualisation tool for consumers (FoodMagnifier). Nutrition and Lifestyle considered food intake and consumer behaviour in vulnerable populations (Foodbook24, eNutriApp, WEI65+) and how these data can be matched, merged and assessed for quality before being used to address research questions. NCDs and healthy diets explored i) healthy diets for healthy microbiome, ii) tool for type-2 diabetes (T2D) and hypertension (HTN) risk assessment and personalised dietary and lifestyle advice (HEALTHWISE), and iii) alert classification system for food-drug interactions (FooDrug). Together with the FNS-Cloud website including the FNS-Cloud Zenodo Community, Cordis EU Research results, FNS-Cloud YouTube channel, and social media accounts alongside myFNSCloud, the community of practice, and FNSCloud Catalogues (www.fnscloud.eu) and FNS Harmony (ontology and related services), these key exploitable results form the basis of a sustainable cloud solution for FNS user communities.
FAIR principles dominated FNS-Cloud activities in 2019-2023 and were crucial in achieving the project´s specific objectives. FNSCloud Catalogue (https://fnscloud.eu) is a web app embedded in a secure single log in (AAI) environment, listing FAIR datasets, tools and services. It supports user-friendly searching, helps to overcome fragmentation and addresses Findability. New datasets generated by FNS-Cloud have been listed therein and a number of technical modifications were made, including topic tree refinement, linking resources, a multiselect list of most popular licenses included in Resource Submission and adding a link to a tutorial explaining how Catalogues work. Moreover, tools and services with the capacity to link to other resources, and enable cross-talk amongst them, have also been developed, improving both Access, Interoperability, and Re-use. FNS-Harmony (ontology) underpins Interoperability, enabling both curation and annotation. Likewise, FNS-Cloud architecture is integrated with services such as Fairspace, allowing re-use of heterogeneous data from different sources (e.g. ENA, MGnify, dbNP, Nutritics Libro) and exporting to standard environments (e.g. R, Jupyter) where analysis can be performed. Detailed exploitation plans, dissemination and communication (D&C) activities, and intellectual property (IP) strategy for each key exploitable results have been detailed in the public deliverable D5.10 available on the project website and the FNS-Cloud Zenodo Community.
WP3 Key exploitable results: Several software solutions have been developed and integrated with FNSCloud. An important exploitable outcome is the FNS-Harmony ontology, and identification and training of potential future data curators to support standardisation and interoperability of heterogeneous FNS data, facilitating data sharing and collaboration.

WP5 Key exploitable results: DEM01: i) Food traceability and metrology search engine, scientific paper, ii) Branded food datasets, several scientific papers showing the results from the use cases, videos, iii) A high-end user MCRA tool (e.g. researchers, risk assessors and TDS experts) and a low-end app - FoodMagnifier - (e.g. consumers, non-TDS professionals). DEM02: i) Datasets, food intake assessment tools (e.g. Foodbook24, eNutri 65+, WIE 60+), videos, training materials. DEM03: i) Datasets derived from the DIME study, metadata submission form, Fairspace (repository), Libro app: ii) Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and hypertension (HTN) risk assessment tool, iii) FooDrug database, webtool, code, e-Learning course.

WP6 Key exploitable results: Project website and social media channels that can potentially be exploited, primarily as a knowledge repository or for educational purposes.

WP7 Key exploitable results: The FNS-Cloud Community of Practice (myFNSCloud) with 46 videos, teasers and e-Learning videos uploaded, describing the demonstrators, talks from the final event and organised workshops on topics of open science.

WP8 Key exploitable results: A governance structure for post-project use and defined IPR license for FNS-Cloud’s tools, products or services. The FNS-Cloud business plan has been crafted, considering the needs of FNSCloud user communities and key exploitable results from the project. It defines the purpose, goals, and operational details of FNSCloud in the short- (2023-2024), medium- (2024-2030) and longer-terms (beyond 2030).

Evaluation of the potential impacts of FNSCloud is complex. It must take into consideration each of the components as well as the whole, and measurement of some aspects are difficult to formalise (e.g. scientific culture) not least because FNSCloud is only one voice in a broad discussion. FNSCloud provides a minimum viable product (catalogues, community of practice, and project website) and/or an enhanced viable product that also includes selected data, tools, services (e.g. FNSHarmony ontology). Impacts of each and the whole must be done on a different basis and will depend on acceptance, use, and implementation. Regarding scientific culture, FNSCloud has embraced Open Science (as a whole), but beneficiaries, FNS researchers, and the domain are still to be convinced and require further support and demonstration of the benefits. Boosting awareness of the value of intellectual property, exploitation pathways, and management of intellectual assets has been a constant during the whole project, but the need is ongoing, especially amongst FNS user communities.
