Fatigue life prediction on Inco 718 part subjected to service induced damage

Project description

Novel methodologies will ensure stress and fatigue do not keep a potential winner down

Air travel is on the rise as increasing globalisation takes more and more people and cargo to the skies for business and pleasure. Clean Sky is the largest European research programme aimed at reducing the CO2, gas emissions, and noise produced by aircraft. Engines have a starring role to play in greener technologies for air flight. The contra-rotating open rotor (CROR) engine concept is one of the most promising. Now, the EU-funded FLECTION project is developing technologies to test the blade design for residual stresses and fatigue. Understanding the microscopic mechanisms leading to decreased fatigue life will support the development of experimental and computational methods to more accurately predict safe life of the selected CROR blade design and materials.

Objective

FLECTION will (1) develop a state-of-the-art experimental methodology for a controlled experimental generation of NDS according to their type and geometrical morphology; facilities such as light gas gun, Hopkinson bar and drop weight will be used for the scope (2) characterise different type of NDS generated at different impact energies, sizes and morphology by means of micro-analysis facilities; (3) characterise the residual stresses and the microstructure around the NDS and will correlate them with the principal features of the NDS; (4) determine the effect of residual stresses and microstructure due to NDS on the fatigue performance of IN718; the material will be thorough characterise and a complex fatigue test campaign of the damaged material will be carried out to highlight the main parameters affect fatigue life; (5) develop, calibrate and validate state-of-the-art multi-scale computational models for the prediction of residual stresses around NDS and for the prediction of fatigue life of damaged material; (6) develop an uncertainty analysis to identify the key parameter affecting fatigue life and to quantify the uncertainty in the predictions of the computational models; (7) develop a comprehensive statistically robust numerical-experimental approach for the prediction of safe life in IN718 components; the experimental methodologies and the computational models will be integrated together.

FLECTION will contribute to Clean Sky LPA by providing an approach to validate the selected blade design of the CROR engine. Furthermore, FLECTION contributes to the European objectives of: development of technology product differentiator from non-EU developers; reduction of green house emissions through increased fuel efficiency and weight reduction; enhanced mobility by creating cost-effective transport.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

IA - Innovation action

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
