Intelligent electronic automotive systems repair support tool for auto repair technicians

Project description

An app to help mechanics repair car wiring

Vehicle electrical systems can be tricky. If a problem arises, mechanics need to search manually to find information about the connector using catalogues. Many times, a solution is not found and sometimes the wrong connector is repaired. The EU-funded WireVision project aims to reverse this problematic trend by developing a smart connector identification and repair tool app to help mechanics identify the correct connector. This solution will make it easier for non-skilled technicians to make the repair, it will ensure that cars are safer, and it will also reduce vehicle downtime.

Objective

Context
Automobile electronics are increasingly complex. Automobile wiring harness’ contain up to 1000 different connectors. There
is no general standard. In turn, every connector needs to be removed using a certain extraction tool when being fixed within
workshops.
Problem
The process of repairing automobile electrical systems can be extremely slow and difficult for most mechanics. Currently,
mechanics must search manually to find information about the connector using catalogues.
Often these mechanics not only take several hours to repair the fault, but often fail to effectively carry out the repair, either
damaging other components or repairing the wrong connector. The end result is that faulty cars continue on the road,
potentially polluting more, are unsafe and will need to be returned to the workshop, creating a bad reputation for the
automobile manufacturer.
This is significant when it is estimated that, when applied across an entire car model, 1 minute saved in a workshop saves 1
million for an OEM every year.
Solution
We have developed WireVision, a smart connector identification and repair tool app that supports technicians to identify the
correct connector in a wiring harness when fixing an automobile.
Our solution offers:
- Repairs to automobiles to be made by non-skilled technicians.
- Safer automobiles that produce less pollution.
- A reduction of car down time by several hours, reducing costs for OEMS.
Project
The aim of the phase I project is to improve our understanding of the market and to help map out a clear route to market. For
phase II, we envisage to scale up the technology and build a commercial and operational strategic plan to demonstrate
these aspects to OEMs on a large scale.
Market Opportunity
We estimate that WireVision could be used as the main tool for supporting automobile workshops fix wiring harness system
connectors, which will have an estimated global market size of over €106 billion by 2025.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
