Feasibility analysis for the development and market introduction of an innovative and multi-functional façade.

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - KlimaFacade (Feasibility analysis for the development and market introduction of an innovative and multi-functional façade.)

Berichtszeitraum: 2019-12-01 bis 2020-03-31

Cities and urban populations continue to rapidly transform with 75% of the world population currently living in urban areas with an expected increase of more than 10% in the next 30 years. As a consequence, there is a growing need to optimise the use of available space. Cities are responsible for over 70% of global energy consumption and CO2 emissions, of which, buildings account for 40% of the EU's energy consumption, 36% of its CO2 emissions and 55% of its electricity consumption. For the above, the emissions and energy savings in this sector is vital to meeting the EU's climate and energy targets. Besides, the stock of buildings in the EU is relatively old, with more than 40% of it built before 1960 and 90% before 1990. On the other hand, climate change is changing drastically the global precipitation patterns all across Europe, causing several problems due to the lack of capacity to remove the excess of water from the city, especially during short and extreme precipitation peaks (i.e. currently 30% heavier rainfall), which are causing floods in European (quadrupled since 1980) with the associated economic losses. Moreover, periods of drought and heat will increase due to the lack of green areas and the over-concentration of urban areas (urban heat island effect). This constitutes an important market opportunity for new technologies. Currently, the types of facades with different materials such as glass, concrete, brick, metal, stone or wooden facade, are less efficient and not sustainable, not helping to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Therefore, Kre_ta GmbH has successfully developed KlimaFaçade, an innovative, flexible, easy to install and cost-effective modular façade to transform new and old buildings in Europe in environmentally friendly green buildings. Our module reduces noise, installation costs (60%), maintenance costs, surface temperature (3-4°C) and the carbon footprint. KlimaFaçade is equipped with a specific developed water storage & management unit (substrate and hydro-gel) which can store 75 l/m2 and impel a high evapotranspiration rate up to 15 l/m2/hour. The basic structure can be combined with standard photovoltaic panels or with plant (green) modules. KlimaFaçade can be installed on all existing types of substructures counting with fast installation, leading to a more cost-effective and sustainable construction. Furthermore, green infrastructure increases the property value. Therefore, now the environmental and economic benefit of living walls and roofs is hard to ignore.

With the support of the European Commission, KlimaFaçade can accelerate the upscaling and keep R&D and pilot line activities on a high level to further upgrade the system quality and to develop more technological research. Moreover, KlimaFaçade is a great chance to extend Europe- and worldwide contacts to potential customers. It is important to highlight that KlimaFaçade’s commercialization will generate high revenues in the targeted market segments of green construction (market share 20%). This equals to an approximate number of more than 35.000 m2 façade generating additional revenue streams of 18.5 M€ for our company from 2019-2025 as well as to triple our workforce by 2025 only in Europe. This ambitious target is reachable by forming a European network of regional suppliers, representatives, and costumers in each targeted country.
1. Identification of the most promising regions concerning the green building and construction sector (especially in already intensively used urban area - European megalopolis and populated cities)
1.1 Market analysis in European regions (facades type, price & benefits comparison)
1.2 Profile of suitable clients (Green building design, green building materials, façade vertical garden, energy-efficient buildings, sustainable buildings, low-carbon buildings)
1.3 Assessment of the price trends of side streams of the green buildings and green building materials for price elasticity of the demand
2 Identification of potential local distributors or commercial agents and setup of a commercialization network
3 Determination of KlimaFaçade systems and commercialization strategies adapted to each region and industry
4 Compilation of a database of potential customers, end-users, and competitors
5 Determination of standards, technical certifications, and norms needed to have complied
6 Business Plan
KlimaFaçade positions itself as the first multi-functional and self-operating façade module, which gives our customers unique flexibility to design a functional and smart building skin. Our compact and functional system methodology will pave the way for green buildings to develop new sustainable construction alternatives. The types of traditional facades do not contribute to improving energy efficiency as well as not facing current problems related to climate change such as actual precipitation patterns and lack of green areas not being able to comply with current and upcoming regulations. Neither they contribute to improving air quality, rainwater retention or biodiversity. Other competitors are self-climbing plants, climbing plants and green facade gardens. However, these are generally costly and fragile solutions due to the intensive care and maintenance required, including regular watering and fertilising. There are some objections to green facades regarding moisture, damage to buildings and nuisance from pests, however, due to the design of KlimaFaçade all these problems are solved.

According to the feasibility study, the European core countries of France, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland- as well as the Benelux countries (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxemburg), and the southern East European states up to Ukraine are common to find green facades. However, its market is still very incipient. As KlimaFaçade has as a main objective the optimization of the available space in an already intensively used urban area, Megapolis such as Berlin, Paris or Madrid will be targeted. The majority of European cities are currently adapting to building legislations to cope with climate change.

As the market for green buildings is growing rapidly several competitors are developing different types of facades with different materials integrated like biodegradable materials, textile solar protection, sustainable insulation material and the sensors necessary for an overall control system such as living walls, climbing plants or green facade gardens. All these are available on the market. However, their costs are high as well as the maintenance, which allows kre_ta GmbH to dictate the market.

First, it is necessary to know the global facade market size is projected to reach €360,4 billion by 2023, at a CAGR of 7.8%. The global vertical garden construction market is expected to grow at an annual rate >11%, (i.e. global market €6.8 billion in 2017 for green roof and façades). Currently, there is a great interest in increasing Vertical Façade Garden Constructions.

Commercially, KlimaFaçade has a very high and promising potential for success because there is great potential to increase the market for green roofs and walls throughout Europe. The green roof and wall market is relatively small. Technically, it is important to continue making a test with different types of plants in various weather conditions with the main objective to avoid losses or unnecessary additional costs.
