Biosolids treatment system for transformation of industrial organic wastes into sustainable and efficient fertilizer with zero emissions

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - BTSys (Biosolids treatment system for transformation of industrial organic wastes into sustainable and efficient fertilizer with zero emissions)

Periodo di rendicontazione: 2019-11-01 al 2020-02-29

Agriculture production in EU and worldwide is facing a huge plea for a more sustainable and efficient agriculture to feed the growing population. There is a huge demand for fertilizer due to the growing population of the world, where without them, 50% of the world would go hungry. Until now, this has meant intensive use of fertilizers and growing production of NPK (the main nutrients of fertilizers) to ensure food security for EU. Current fertilisers pose a huge environmental risk, and act as one of the largest polluters worldwide. They contaminate the water resources with nitrates and phosphates. The presence of high nitrate levels in drinking water are considered to be dangerous to human health. This has made the fertilizer industry one of the largest environmental polluter’s worldwide, fuelling more environmental degradation. Furthermore, industrial waste management is becoming more challenging to control and ensure that all waste is effectively treated and disposed of without causing environmental damage. Agristarbio, founded in 2016, aims to contribute to a more sustainable world with realistic and economically viable environmental solutions by promoting efficient use of resources. The Company's vision is to be a global reference in the production of sustainable agricultural nutrition solutions from environmental liabilities.
To overcome the issues described above, the Agristarbio team has developed BTSys (Biosolids Treatment System), an innovative, environmental-friendly technology to transform industrial organic wastes into an efficient fertilizer without any CO2 or CH4 emissions, recycling all the nutrients. By utilising the organic waste generated from these sources to produce fertilisers, Agristarbio also addresses the environmental concern with disposal of organic waste thereby enabling circular economy and reducing significant costs in the agriculture industry.
During the project, Agristarbio defined the users’ requirements, reviewed the product development plan, defined the pre-industrialisation activities, and scouted for pilot validation partners to support in the pilot validation stages. The market segments and opportunities have also been evaluated, defining the Total and Serviceable Available Market (TAM and SAM). Agristarbio established a sound commercialisation strategy. The Phase 1 feasibility assessment showed that a development plan for the BTSys is technically and commercially viable, and that implementation of a commercialisation plan should be pursued. EIC Accelerator Pilot funding could provide the correct amount of funding and support to allow the stated activities to be implemented successfully.
To meet the food demands of the EU and the world's growing population, the agricultural systems are using a large number of chemical fertilizers to achieve more production per unit area. Soil nutrient level decreases during growth, and these nutrients get replenished either through natural decomposition process or by adding fertilizers. Hence fertilizer is an essential component of modern agriculture. But its overuse is bringing serious challenges such as polluted air, water, and soil, the degraded lands, depleted soils and increased emissions of greenhouse gas. These chemical fertilizers are not only becoming hazardous for the environment but also to humans, animals and to the microbial life forms too. To tackle this environmental burden on Europe's agricultural resources, the EU has set out a European Green Deal for the European Union (EU) and its citizens. The Green Deal is an integral part of the Commission’s strategy to implement the United Nation’s 2030 Agenda and the sustainable development goals. To ensure a toxic-free environment, the Commission will present a chemicals strategy for sustainability in summer 2020. The circular economy, including new waste and recycling law, will represent half of the EU's effort to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and will be the top priority of the upcoming European Green Deal. Agristarbio acknowledges the importance of EU policies and strategies and offers BTSys which is the only solution that solves two major contributors to environmental pollution-chemical fertilizer and waste disposal.
BTSys will:
• Enable EU citizens to lead a life independent of environmental liabilities
• Promote a sustainable agriculture for the growing population thereby enabling a 'green and circular economy
