Objective
- Prevent infection of live birds (including game birds) with potentially pathogenic microorganisms including Salmonella, Campylobacter, Listeria and Staph. aureus.
- Prevent contamination of poultry meat and poultry meat products.
- Apply end-product decontamination and protection methods.
- Develop sampling protocols.
- Develop and apply microbiological detection methods.
- Personnel training.
Many laboratories, institutes, universities and commercial companies are involved in this important field of research.
Transfer of research results should be coordinated and encouraged. This should result in more efficient spending of research funds and help define future research areas.

CURRENT STATUS
Three subgroups will carry out the work:
- Colonisation Control
This group will deal with five topics: origin of the infection, bird-related factors, flock management, organism-related factors and each sub-group's sampling and detection methods.
- Production and Operational Hygiene
Four topics: flock related factors, ante mortem infection, transport, plant design.
- Processed Poultry Meat Production
Slaughtering and dressing procedures, further processing, protocols for good hygiene practices, product development, structural aspects of plants.
