Fomento de la integración entre la ingeniería biomédica, la biología y la medicina
El objetivo del proyecto MOBILIsE, financiado con fondos europeos, es fomentar la integración entre la ingeniería biomédica, la biología y la medicina al hacer hincapié en las interacciones a nivel molecular con efecto en la salud humana. Se centrará también en el cáncer, las infecciones, las enfermedades neurodegenerativas y en la reparación y regeneración de tejidos. Para ello, el proyecto contratará a un investigador para ser nombrado director de cátedra del Espacio Europeo de Investigación (EEI) en el Instituto de Ingeniería Biomédica (INEB, por sus siglas en portugués) en Portugal. El titular de la cátedra dirigirá la investigación en bioingeniería molecular, que se centrará en la medicina de precisión, más concretamente en tratamientos dirigidos y diagnósticos moleculares. En última instancia, MOBILIsE creará un grupo de investigación de bioingeniería molecular que mejorará aún más la excelencia en la investigación del INEB.
Objetivo
MOBILIsE aims to recruit an outstanding Researcher to act as the ERA Chair Holder to the National Institute of Biomedical Engineering (INEB). She/he will establish a new research direction in Molecular Bioengineering focused on precision medicine, namely in targeted therapies and molecular diagnosis, and create a synergic and cohesive research environment among key stakeholders (academy, research institutes, clinicians and industry) in the Porto region: the MOBILIsE hub. The MOBILIsE project will boost the translation of the design of new molecular targets to the application of diagnostic tools and therapies targeted to the major health challenges, with particular focus on cancer, infection, neurodegenerative diseases, and tissue repair/regeneration that have been explored at the institute. INEB is already recognized for its fundamental work in protein/cell-materials interactions and in the development of nanotechnology tools for targeted controlled drug delivery. Yet, the potential and projection at international level of cross-disciplinary research, like the application of nanomedicine to cancer and neurologic disorders, is still limited. This has a major impact on funding attraction, transfer of technology, and translational potential of the research developed. Hence, this project will hire an expert in Molecular Bioengineering to install an internationally competitive research group focused on precision medicine. The group will exploit nanotechnology tools to discover new molecular targets that can be explored in the design of new diagnostic and/or therapeutic systems. The MOBILIsE project will promote the integration between biomedical engineering, biology and medicine, by focusing on (vital) interactions at the molecular level with impact on human health. Ultimately, MOBILIsE aims to establish a Molecular Bioengineering research group that will facilitate critical institutional structural changes to maximize the high potential for research excellence at INEB.
