Deliverables

Novel approaches and models for effective communication with consumers in relation to food labelling claims, novel foods, circular economy and nanotechnology (opens in new window)

The ESR15 will establish new approaches and models for more efficient communication with consumers in respect of consumer perceptions (labelling, new alternative foods, nano-materials) and consumption behavior (from a health, sustainability and waste perspective).

Doctoral theses for 15 ESRs (opens in new window)

PhD thesis approved by co-supervisors. All ESR training activities start with recruitment and end with the award of the doctoral degree. The actual defence of the PhD may occur outside project timeline (48 months) depending on the academic system the ESR is enrolled in.

Identified CEC in novel foods of animal origin (opens in new window)

ESR9 at UA will identify emerging chemicals in novel food commodities of animal origin using non-target and suspect screening based methods.

Evaluation of food safety in a system of reuse of resources in tomato cultivation (opens in new window)

ESR10 (JSI) will assess reuse of wastewaters for agricultural irrigation and nutritional value and safety of crops. Tomato varieties – as a model plant (JSI), grown conventionally and hydroponically and irrigated with natural, artificial and “real” wastewaters, will be investigated.

Elucidation of markers to differentiate organic vs conventional beekeeping products (opens in new window)

ESR5 at INIA will characterize bioactive compounds as markers of organic beekeeping.

ESRs Personal and Career Development Plan (PCDP) (opens in new window)

To ensure that recruited ESRs during their 36 months contract experience and partake in the diverse training develop their technical and transferable skills and enhance their future employability the beneficiaries will ensure that each ESR develop and maintain their biannual PCDP

MSI protocols for fast screening of polymeric residues in seafood for use by regulatory bodies and policy-makers (opens in new window)

The ESR14 at M4I will develop MSI protocols for fast polymer characterisation and detection in seafood to be used by regulation bodies and policy-makers. To achieve this objective ESR will apply high mass/spatial resolution mass spectrometry for the characterisation of surface properties, interaction with food components and determination of microplastic polymer contamination of seafood and different aquatic species.

Integrated consumer assurance protocol framework and toolkit for trust, to assure food quality and traceability throughout the supply chain (opens in new window)

ESR6 at JSI will develop novel strategies for verifying food authenticity and build consumer trust. A common strategic platform of confidence and protection based on new and emerging food authenticity screening tools will be developed to assure food legitimacy, quality and traceability. This approach will be validated on target tests such as rice, oil, wine, meat and fish products; optimizing sampling strategies and protocols based on the commercial logistics throughout the food supply chain; from producer to manufacturer to supplier to consumer.

Assessment of uptake of microplastics and nanoplastics in edible plants (opens in new window)

ESR7 (INIA) will investigate the uptake of microplastic (MP, 100 nm-5 mm), nanoplastics (NP < 100 nm) and chemicals including pesticides, bisphenols, personal care products (PCP) and PAHs in crop plants in order to establish advice regarding consumption of vegetables.

Identified biomarkers for discriminating organic vs conventional pasta and rice (opens in new window)

ESR1 at FEM will identify biomarkers for discriminating organic vs conventional pasta and rice using IRMS.

Identify the presence of bioactive compounds in traditional raw milk cheeses and in novel dairy products added with healthy and functional bacteria (opens in new window)

ESR2 at FEM will develop and validate a method for verifying the authenticity of dairy production coming from different production processes raw vs pasteurised milk using IRMS and to assess the difference in bioactive compounds related to animal feedingfarming free grazing pasture vs conventional farming different fibre ratio in the animal feeding The production will be characterised by stable isotope ratios of H C N O and S using IRMS and elemental composition using ICPMS

Multimodal analysis and data integration for improved wine classification/origin (opens in new window)

ESR3S will perform rapid evaporative ionisation mass spectrometry for direct molecular profiling of the leaves. This objective will lead to the characterisation of the different metabolic profiles of the leaves that will provide information about the specific compounds related to the method of viticulture. All MS data will be statistically evaluated by ESR3 using chemometrics and the results used for wine discrimination.

The ESR4 at JSI will develop edible photonic barcodes system for food traceability. The developed micro-photonic components will be made entirely out of edible materials, and ESR4 will explore their potential for barcoding in food.

Outreach activities (opens in new window)

The consortium will develop the Industrial strategy Liaison group; collate all outreach material and publish through social media; exploit through dissemination the findings of the FoodTraNet project, e.g. through a training portfolio for the food surveillance industry; inform ESRs about Intellectual Property. Other activities include project promo video, local events, YouTube clips, ESR blogs, linkedin, Facebook and e-learning recourses, ETN project Open Day, Public Talks, e-Newsletters, Multimedia Releases (interviews, newspapers, TV and radio programs), Online Course Material.

"Multi-functional ""Smart"" MIPs and SAPs materials" (opens in new window)

The ESR8 at AUTH will synthesise smart polymer nanostructured materials for selective removal of bioactive compounds and compounds of emerging concern. Novel polymer sorbents and/or coatings - MIPs and SAPs -with remarkable properties (e.g. high selectivity, multifunctionality etc.) will be used.

The ESR11 at IOS will produce new nano-sensors for determination organophosphates, freshness and bio-sensors for food quality.
