Creation Of new value chain Relations through novel Approaches facilitating Long-term Industrial Symbiosis

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - CORALIS (Creation Of new value chain Relations through novel Approaches facilitating Long-term Industrial Symbiosis)

Periodo di rendicontazione: 2022-04-01 al 2023-09-30

CORALIS main challenge is to overcome the problems when implementing real Industrial Symbiosis (IS) solutions. CORALIS is tackling the problem from three different perspectives; technical, economical, and managerial. CORALIS will first obtain specific knowledge from the experience of implementing real demonstration IS solutions in different sites (demonstration ones, where a real solution will be implemented and follower ones, sites that will learn from the demonstration ones) from different industrial sectors and at different degrees of development. And as a consequence, CORALIS will learn about the knowledge for the implementation of future IS solutions. This is important and has positive effects for our society since IS allows a closer and more sustainable approach towards circulatory with positive environmental, economic, and social effects.

The main objective of CORALIS is to create pathways for the decarbonisation of resource and energy intensive sector value chains through the implementation of viable industrial symbiosis approaches combining new business and management strategies with innovative technology-based enablers. This whole approach will be demonstrated in three real industrial areas covering different sectors, geographical dimensions and resources, improving the knowledge basis and laying the foundations for exploiting the potential of Industrial Symbiosis in EU process industry.
The specific goals that will enable the achievement of CORALIS are presented hereinafter:
• To acquire deeper understanding on Industrial Symbiosis performance and conditioning factors from the technical, economic and managerial perspective
• To promote the design and management of Industrial Symbiosis projects by empowering the figure of the Industrial Symbiosis facilitator and delivering novel tools for processes monitoring and data sharing
• To enhance the profitability and sustainability of symbiotic interactions by defining new methodologies for economic evaluation and business models for industrial partnerships.
• To implement novel symbiotic value chains in three real industrial areas for their decarbonization through the deployment of innovative technology enablers.
• To provide technical and management guidance to three industrial areas in successfully exploiting identified symbiosis synergies.
• To raise awareness and ensure the exploitation of the IS potential in Resource and Energy Intensive Industries by fostering cooperation and knowledge transfer among stakeholders and contributing to standardisation and policy bodies.
The project is primarily driven by two main objectives: the real implementation of Industrial Symbiosis (IS) cases and the development of cross-sectional knowledge on IS. During the initial 18 months, activities related to these two objectives were undertaken:

- the sites were prepared for the implementation of IS solutions. This involved a comprehensive baseline characterization from technical, managerial, and economic perspectives. Key tasks included defining engineering specifications, procuring and installing necessary equipment, and managing administrative requirements such as permits and contracts.
- General knowledge on IS was first gathered to understand how it could be applied in the processes of the project.

For the period Month 19 to 36, progress was made in the following areas:
- Demonstrations of various solutions began, offering learning opportunities and facilitating the extraction of cross-sectional conclusions.
- From a cross-sectional perspective, several tasks were completed, including techno-economic methodologies and market analysis. These efforts will contribute to the derivation of general guidelines.

In conclusion, despite a slight delay, the project is progressing towards its objectives.
The overall impact of CORALIS approaches on the Lighthouse demonstrators will be based on a combination of the demonstration of innovative technologies enabling new symbiotic interactions, and the technoeconomic assessment and provision of processes and business tolls for the implementation of identified future opportunities.
