Drug discovery screening using human neurons

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - HumanNeuronScreen (Drug discovery screening using human neurons)

Periodo di rendicontazione: 2020-11-01 al 2022-04-30

Brain disorders present a staggering health-care burden, costing around 800 billion euros per year in the EU and affecting almost 180 million people. Currently, development of treatments for these disorders is very unsuccessful. We have developed technology to preclinically test the potentials of new treatments in human neuron disease models using advanced optical tools to measure neuronal signaling, called the HumanNeuronScreen. The HumanNeuronScreen ERC PoC project aimed to establish the commercial potential for this technology through technical validation, determination of an IP strategy, market validation and designing the best business strategy for a future commercial enterprise. During the project we have taken multiple steps to scale and standardized our technology to an industrial standard and successfully signed two projects with pharmaceutical companies to test new treatments for severe neurodevelopmental disorders. A business plan has been created and we are currently in the process of establishing a spin-off company from the university to further commercialize the technology.
