Deliverables

Regular events to present and discuss project output and help shape future activities with external stakeholders (opens in new window)

Three workshops will be organized to address knowledge gaps regarding standardization and regulation. In addition, at least three events will be organized in collaboration with existing external events to maximize opportunities to engage stakeholders. Their purpose is to present and discuss PlasticsFate results and help shape policy recommendations.

Integrated human health and environmental RA strategy (opens in new window)

This report specifies the integration of human health relevant environments (i.e. agricultural soils, water and ambient air) including both functional (e.g. soil respiration) and structural (e.g. species diversity) components into the human health RA strategy. This will be done in the format of IATAs (Integrated Approach to Testing and Assessment). Interim report by M24.

Review of current regulations, and policy and market (opens in new window)

This will identify any knowledge gaps that need to be addressed through project activities, as well as understanding the current state of the art, including products on the market, and identifying key stakeholders.

Stakeholder roundtables (opens in new window)

Two roundtables will be organized with key stakeholders in the final year of the project to validate project recommendations.

Biomarkers for exposure monitoring and specific endpoints of MP/NP (opens in new window)

Report on the validity of the selected biomarkers to monitor human exposure to NP/MP.

Report on results from the ILS on methods developed for hazard assessment of MP/NP and A/C in the human body (opens in new window)

A selection of methodologies will be suggested that are most suitable for Risk Assessment, in close cooperation with WP4. Interim Report M36 (confidential but available to EC and project partners).

Formulated recommendations for standards and regulations, and guidelines for their use (opens in new window)

These will identify the necessary data (and data gaps) to develop new regulations and standards, and deliver recommendations to relevant committees and working groups that PlasticsFatE partners are already engaged in.

Human health hazard of MP/NP and A/C (opens in new window)

A MP/NP selection of materials will be screened to evaluate the toxicity of MP/NP in immortalized human cell lines from different origins, i.e. pulmonary (A549), intestinal (Caco-2) and immune (THP-1). The impact of the MP/NPs on these cells will be studied using new in vitro assays and modelling approaches. Interim report M36 (confidential but available to EC and project partners).

Report on selected MP/NP and basic PChem features (opens in new window)

In the report it will be explained how the selection, storage, distribution and basic characterization of material is performed. In addition, some techniques for labeling and traceability of materials will be described.

Overview of human exposure sources and levels of MP/NP (opens in new window)

Report with a comprehensive overview of the human exposure levels of MP/NP related to their different sources based on the recent literature and measured and modelled data from previous projects.

Specifications of a decision support system (DSS) (opens in new window)

The DSS will be optimized and finalized based on the input provided by the partners.

Fate of MP/NP in the human body (opens in new window)

Report on the exposure levels and fate of micro- and nanoplastics in the human gastro-intestinal tract, the human body, and human excretion determined by static and dynamic models.

Final conference (opens in new window)

This event will be organized in collaboration with other projects in the European MNP cluster on human health to present final results and recommendations to relevant stakeholders.

Effects of physicochemical properties of plastic particles on their toxicity (opens in new window)

The particle size, surface properties, crystallinity, and shape as determinants of cytotoxicity, biodistribution and persistence in the human body will be studied. Interim report M24 (confidential but available to EC and project partners).

During the project lifetime all relevant activities/projects at European level on dispersion and physico-chemical characterization of MP/NP will be monitored in T1.5. Establishing a human health RA strategy for MP/NP (opens in new window)

This will be implemented in the form of an integrated testing strategy (ITS) which specifies a tied, step-by-step procedure with the associated test systems (IATAs). Interim report by M24.

Report on improvements following the use of key performance indicators (opens in new window)

The report will gather information about how the use of KPI will improve quality and performance of the results within WP1-4. Interim report (M33).

Recommendations to policymakers for future strategy on Plastics and the Bioeconomy (opens in new window)

This consists of at least 4 short, targeted, policy briefs summarizing and contextualizing key project results for policymakers, supported by a short animation that is accessible and understandable to a broad audience.

Report in which the methodologies defined and established for the occupational exposure assessment and biomonitoring will be detailed.

Report on long-term effects of MP/NP and A/C in the human body (opens in new window)

Report in which the results of investigations on long-term effects relevant for human (inhalation study and biomarkers data) and media (bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms) will be presented. Interim report (M33).

State of the art in microplastic risk assessement (opens in new window)

The report will summarise the legal requirements for the regulation of plastic. Possible gaps in the current legal frameworks as well as data needs will be identified and specified.

Prototype of the prospective multi criteria decision support system (PMCDS) (opens in new window)

The PMCSD will support end-users through an early decision-making process in an prospective approach integrating data on applications, performance needs, exposure and hazard. This prototype will allow the conduction of case studies.

Joint activities with other relevant projects and programs on risk assessment of MP/NP (opens in new window)

This activity will foster the communication and cooperation with other initiatives in the field of risk assessment of MP/NP.

Report with the results obtained through flow cytometry-based method and molecular tools.

Human exposure to micro- and nanoplastics (opens in new window)

The report will describe the exposure levels of humans to micro- and nanoplastics related to inhalation, ingestion of food and potables, and personal care products.

Results of the ILS on measurement and sample preparation methods for hazard and exposure testing (opens in new window)

The most suitable MP/NP materials selected in T1.1 as well as tested in other projects will be defined in T1.4 for analyses in various matrices relevant to human exposure. The main goal is the comparability between the results of selected properties in different laboratories and obtained by different methods. The envisaged platform is VAMAS within the new formed technical work area TWA 45 Materials and Environment. D1.6 has an interim preliminary report in M38.

Bioaccumulation, effects and cell uptake mechanisms of plastics particles and additives/contaminants (opens in new window)

Uptake and possible cellular bioaccumulation of MP/NP particles will be studied to understand the number of particles, size and chemical composition of particles bioaccumulated and taken up by cells. Interim report M36 (confidential but available to EC and project partners).

Transport of plastics particles and additives/contaminants across biological barriers and its impact on barrier properties (opens in new window)

The barriers used will include, primary cells from lung epithelium grown in an air-liquid interphase, a gastro-intestinal barrier co-culture model of epithelial cells and macrophages, and a blood brain barrier consisting. Interim report in M24.

Annual training workshops based on new knowledge generated within the project (opens in new window)

This consists of two physical and two virtual training events to impart knowledge gained within PlasticsFatE to the wider research community. Material will also be downloadable from the website and information provided that is accessible to a wider audience.

Human immune effects of MP/NP (opens in new window)

The three major immune systems will be investigated in vitro and in mice: the innate immune response, the adaptive immune and the induced tolerance will be investigated in addition to the effect of adsorption of bacteria, fungi and bacteriophages on MP/NP particles in inducing these immune systems. Modelling of MP/NP for environmental fate, human exposure and toxicokinetics (opens in new window)

The mathematical equations that compose the environmental fate, human exposure, and toxicokinectic prediction models as well as the parameters considered will be collected and explained in a report.

Web and social media presence (opens in new window)

A project website will be produced that acts as a repository and shop front for all publishable project output. This will connect with social media channels such as LinkedIn, Twitter and YouTube (Task 6.1).

Prototype of a web-based decision support system (opens in new window)

A web-based e-tool will be developed to estimate human and environmental health risks along the lifecycle of plastic materials and products. The prototype will include most of the features and presented for discussion to the partners.

Final Prospective multi criteria decision support system (PMCDS) (opens in new window)

By integrating the findings made in the case studies, the PMCDS will be finalized and implemented in the web-based platform.
