Objective
Current teaching methods rely heavily on training grounded in conventional pre-telematic practices where the tutor controlled the pace and progress of the learner. With the development of open-learning systems the tutor-learner relationship has radically changed. Roles must be redefined, approaches restructured, new skills and strategies learned for the full potential of the new learning environment to be realised.
This project aims to develop a teacher training programme designed to enhance the quality and effectiveness of training delivered through open-learning systems. Preliminary research, to establish the skills needed to facilitate effective learning, will be conducted into the new learning environment and how it impact on learner and trainer, existing practices in telematic delivery, administrative, methodological and support structures conditioning effective learning, existing materials and coursework and the role of the trainer in the new environment. On the basis of the findings, a modular skills training programme for facilitation will be designed and tested telematically and evaluated at mid-point.
Methodology will also be developed to assess the strengths and weaknesses of telematic course delivery in general. This will also provide a means of measuring the effectiveness of individual courses through the medium.
Impact
The project will lead to the improved quality of training offered through telematic learning and to a model for best practice of benefit to all operators in the field of telematically delivered learning.
