Ultra-fast Graphene Photodetectors

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - ULTRAPHO (Ultra-fast Graphene Photodetectors)

Berichtszeitraum: 2022-05-01 bis 2023-04-30

The ULTRAPHO project aims to validate and commercialise a novel photonics concept which will boost Europe’s semiconductor industry to a world-leading level in the field of photonics technologies and devices that use graphene to increase the data transmission capacity of optical fibres. The consortium will bring to market an ultrafast broadband graphene photodetector that is key for data centres and 5G infrastructure.
Graphenea, AMO, Black Semiconductor (BLK) and Etteplan work together in order to accomplish the objectives set in the ULTRAPHO project and bring closer to the market an ultrafast broadband graphene photodetector product.

Silicon on insulator (SOI) wafers designed and fabricated by BLK and AMO are first shipped to Graphenea for graphene deposition, then to AMO for graphene device fabrication and then to BLK for optical and electrical interface development and photodetector performance measurements. Etteplan works on the automated assembly of the photonic components.
Currently there are no graphene based photodetector products in the market and the current devices based on InP are very expensive, not compatible with silicon technology, and have only limited optical bandwidth. The graphene photodetectors of the ULTRAPHO consortium will operate in a much broader spectral range and the technology will be much cheaper compared to current InP technology.
