Objective
Pilot licenses are divided into three levels of certificates : Private Pilot License (PPL - first level); Commercial Pilot License (CPL); and Airline Traffic Pilot License (ATPL). These levels naturally overlap, and the theory syllabus for the higher levels is based on the syllabus in the lower ones. Training facilities not connected to large airlines often suffer from lack of resources, so training methods are primarily based on distant learning. There is a disturbingly high failure-rate in the students' exam results. Organisations that run these courses need to adapt, revise and develop current training material, teaching methods and syllabuses. However, many do not have the advantage of back-up from large airlines and, therefore, have marginal resources to fulfil such tasks.
This aim of this project is to deal with the above requirements by developing textbooks, a list of set reading and syllabuses adapted for the highest level of pilot training (ATPL). In addition, the project will make use of new technology by adapting Computer Based Training (CBT) to deliver the course. By using CBT, via CD-ROM, educational institutions will be able to manage more efficiently the need to adapt their training to new requirements.
Impact
The project will improve the quality of training in establishments not connected to large airlines, and will lead to improved theoretical knowledge amongst students.
