The project concerns the development of a system concept and testbed demonstration of wireless public access to integrated services digital network (ISDN) services. The system will operate in the 19 GHz band with user bit rates up to 34 Mbit/s and radio transmission ranges between 50 to 100 m. The project will support limited, slow speed mobility as in line with expected use of high data services, but with improved portability. The project builds upon the use of experimental prototype at 19 GHz asynchronous transmission mode (ATM) wireless platform. During the first phase of the project, the ATM wireless access (AWA) pre-prototype equipment was successfully introduced to the project. The equipment and channel sounder have been configured for 19 GHz propagation characteristics and propagation simulation techniques in order to measure the propagation data efficiently. The project has defined forecasted wireless ATM applications to be used for trials towards the final stage of the project and the demonstration system has been configured for this purpose in order to achieve real time experience for further ATM wireless access communication system (AWACS) development. In system studies, initial link level simulations and system level simulations (users, capacity and coverage) have been conducted. Some preliminary statistical propagation models have been integrated for the simulations and a spatial propagation model is proposed for wireless ATM. Further, reference models and performance parameter sets have been analysed. The real time trials will indicate the capacity of the available system in a real user environment and will contribute to the development of common specifications and standards.
Summary : The objective of the AWACS field trial studies was to collect real-life information on the usability and performance of the AWACS trial system. In order to achieve this objective, the following sub field trials were conducted in this activity: Effect of base station (BS) or Central Station (CS) - mobile station (MS) directional antenna combination and positioning when obstacles in the field trial environment. Wireless ATM MPEG1 based audio-video link establishing Field trial system user and usability studies The first step in the trial was to select proper antenna combination for the field trial environment by performing radio link coverage and performance, i.e. ATM cell based bit error rate (BER) and cell loss rate (CLR), measurements by the ATM tester. The radio link coverage measurements were performed in order to identify the field trial environment from the point of view of the 19GHz radio link. The wireless ATM link BER and CLR performance were determined next with several BS-MS directional antenna combinations. As a result of this part of trial proper MS and BS antenna locations and antenna combinations for the field trial environment were justified. The following sub-part of this activity was the MPEG1 based audio-video application developing, and finally the several AWACS system parts integration. The AWA demonstrator was integrated into the backbone ATM local are network (LAN), and then, after the MPEG1 based application was developed the application was integrated also into the wireless ATM LAN. After the integration work of the whole system was done, the wireless ATM effects on the application were studied by the next step of the trial, i.e. user and usability study. The user and usability study consisted of three sub-parts: user study, system components usability study, and finally the whole system usability study. In the user study the potential AWACS system users were interviewed before they started to use the AWACS system. In the system components study the field trial configuration was divided into three main interesting parts: designer site, production site, and mobility. The whole AWACS system was studied next by an observation and a questionnaire.
