Www window for acts trials and testbeds

Ziel

The main goals of WATT are:
to support trials on network inter-operability and multimedia service integration by providing remote access to these trials and their hosting platforms through the WWW, and
to disseminate important trial results within and outside the EU (Eastern Europe, in particular), through courses and off-line demonstrations.
hMAN project) will be monitored through accessing directly its Management Information Base, without use of any management functions. In a second step, the management facilities of the EXPERT platform will be involved to provide information about the physical and logical configuration of the platform, resource usage by the established connections, etc. A trial on bandwidth allocation and routing, scheduled by the EXPERT project, will be monitored at this stage. In subsequent steps, monitoring of multi-vendor equipment involved in more advanced applications (e.g. a signalling and service-related control application, planned by EXPERT) will be performed. Some early demonstrations are scheduled during related international events (Open Rennes Workshop, March 24-25 1997; Second Distributed Workshop on Network Interoperability, June 1997, Madeira)
Key Issues
Co-operation with key-projects that plan to perform trials and demonstrations on ATM network interoperability and multimedia service integration (EXPERT, AMUSE, NICE).
Representation of platform- , project- and trial-related information in a structured and easily accessible way through the Web (HTML pages and JAVA applets).
Creation of an interface between the WWW and the Network Management software of the involved platforms to promote on-line monitoring of trials
Conduct and remote monitoring of trials / demonstrations performed by ACTS projects (such as EXPERT and CAShMAN).
Creation of a demonstration authoring tool to ease presentations of ATM trials and their results.
Establishment of links and organisation of demonstrations and courses to disseminate results outside ACTS (Eastern Europe, in particular).//OBJ_OBJ_TXTThe main goals of WATT are:

Main contributions to the programme objectives:
Main deliverables
Definition of architecture and a prototype implementation of a Web-based system for on-line remote monitoring of experiments on broadband networking platforms
Contribution to the programme
Information dissemination concerning ATM technology and selected ACTS testbeds and trials within and outside the EU (eastern European countries, in particular)
Technical Approach
The technical steps towards fulfilling the objectives of the project can be summarised as follows:
Information database: The necessary raw data on platforms, projects and trials will be collected. Besides the directly associated EXPERT and AMUSE platforms, other testbeds within NICE will be reviewed, so as to obtain input for establishing a design of general applicability. The collected data will not be used as is, but will lead to the definition of a set of information categories, which will be used to design a generic database format. This format will allow: (a) differing testbed architectures to be incorporated under the same logical structure; and (b) foreseeable future modifications of the testbeds to still be conformant with this logical structure.
Interface between the WWW and the Network Management systems: The design will be separated into two modules: a "platform independent" module common to all target-testbeds, and a "platform dependent" part that will be customised for each specific testbed, according to the structure and functionality of the respective Network Management system. The two modules will share a "clean" interface, with single entry and exit points per module. A graphical user interface will be added at the client's side to enhance the user interface. The prototype interface will be implemented on the EXPERT testbed.
Conduct and on-line monitoring of trials and demos: The set of trials will be selected so as to:
(a) comprehensively demonstrate the results of WATT; and (b) to exploit inter-project cooperation to the highest degree. Particular events and parameters to be monitored remotely will be identified, marking items to be represented graphically at the remote location. A preliminary selection of trials has already been made, early enough to guide the design and steer the inter-project cooperation. A more comprehensive selection will follow at a later stage.
Off-line demonstrations and courses: A demonstration authoring tool will be designed and implemented, as an aid for integrating stored trial-data with other supplementary material; exploitation of already available appropriate software will be sought. Then, a set of trial results, of significant educational value, will be collected and structured appropriately for subsequent use in the development of demonstrations and courses. Finally, technology courses will be developed and conducted by the East European partners, according to the needs in their respective countries.
Summary of Trial
An initial set of trials have already been selected for validating the WATT system and demonstrating respective ATM-technology topics. In a first step, a single platform element (an accounting device, used by the CA$hMAN project) will be monitored through accessing directly its Management Information Base, without use of any management functions.
