Mobile summit

Ziel

Main Objective

The main objectives of AMOS are to disseminate of results of the ACTS Mobile Projects, facilitate concertation among the different actors, and highlight the evolutionary status of Mobile Communications and its potential convergence with the information technology. AMOS has the following major objectives:

-to present and publish technical papers reflecting the most important results of Mobile Domain projects as well as the technical positions of various actors outside ACTS;

-to formulate and test up-to-date evolutionary scenarios for mobile systems by means of round tables and panel discussions addressing key issues in the industrial world.

These objectives will be achieved by organising and managing the fourth ACTS Mobile Summit to be held in June 1999.

Technical Approach

AMOS will provide logistical and technical support for the Mobile Summit. During the preparatory phase, technical support will be provided in conjunction with active Mobile Domain projects. Logistical support will be provided to ensure the timely provision of all the resources needed for a successful Mobile Summit. These support activities will involve the European Commission and ACTS initiatives -to identify dates, technical background and dissemination opportunities. The Mobile Summit will provide an ideal environment for discussing technical topics of world-wide importance, so it is important for AMOS to seek IEEE sponsorship.

Summary of Trial

In accordance with the procedures and tradition of the Mobile Summit, AMOS will co-ordinate the execution of trials and demonstrations within the Summit period. The Summit will undoubtedly attract significant technical/industrial interest because it will take place at a critical stage in the transition between the 4th and 5th Frameworks and at a critical point on the path to third generation systems and services.
Expected Achievements

Within the ACTS Programme, AMOS aims at:

-promoting the technological achievements and highlighting the market opportunities and trends to the main actors in the Mobile Communication and IT field;

-promoting the R&D role played by the European Community through the ACTS programme for Global Communication;

-assessing the success of ACTS results in the light of the early phase of the Fifth Framework.

Expected Impact

The 4th Mobile Summit will facilitate the exchange of technical and scientific information among Industrial Organisations, Universities and Research Centres. This will:

-reinforce the European position in the field of Mobile Communication and build on the success of GSM;

-offer a comprehensive view of the technical opportunities, service applications and technical challenges that are expected at the turn of the century ;

-increase technical awareness and social consciousness about the emerging technologies and services;

-clarify employment-sensitive issues which need to be addressed at the enterprise or political level.

Most of the ACTS Projects are working in conjunction with (or in support of) standards bodies leading the definition of mobile systems. For this reason, AMOS also presents an opportunity for evaluating the real role that an R&D programme can play in the project design phase. The achievements within the standardisation bodies will be addressed by considering:

-the R&D support needed in the design phase of highly advanced technical solutions

-the effort needed to evaluate the complexity and performance of alternative solutions.

Main contributions to the programme objectives:
Main deliverables
Organisation and smooth running of the 4th ACTS MOBILE Telecommunications Summit (Sorrento Italy, June 1999)
Contribution to the programme
Dissemination of ACTS Mobile results, and support to concertation activities
Key Issues

AMOS consolidates the technical and scientific achievements driving the evolution of mobile communication in Europe. Effective dissemination of this information is a key issue for the project and a special effort will be made in this area (proceedings, CD-ROM, interviews etc).
