Exploitable results

A new modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) system has been developed for use on-board ship which will increase shelf-life and will allow more flexibility in relation to the day the ship returns to port. The continuation of the MAP chain on-shore is also of obvious interest to the distribution sector. Nine containers for modified atmosphere (MA) tests on-board ship and on-shore have been installed and the prototype of the first MA system for bulk-fish on board designed. To-date tests have been done on hake, megrim, monkfish, cod, cephalopodous and Norwegian lobster and the results suggest that the bulk on-ship system is very useful for maintaining fish quality at sea. The follow-on storage life in consumer-size MAP packs remains to be tested.
