NEUROENDOCRINE REGULATION OF REPRODUCTION AND INDUCED BREEDING IN THE MEDITERRANEAN YELLOWTAIL (SERIOLA DUMERILII, RISSO 1810)

Ziel

The Mediterranean yellow tail, Seriola dumerilii (Risso 1810) is an important fish species for intensive farming because of its fast growth rate, high commercial value and its suitability for aquaculture. At present, production in farms is based on the use of fry or juveniles collected from the sea since spontaneous spawning does not occur in captivity. Induction of gonad final maturation, spawning and the rearing of larvae is necessary to improve yellowtail culture. In order to develop efficient protocols for the induction of maturation and spawning, it is vital to understand the endocrine regulation of reproduction. Such knowledge is a prerequisite to localize the physiological defects that prevent reproduction in captivity.

The primary aim of this project is to study the effect of different hormones on maturation, in particular the gonadotropin releasing hormone, GnRH. The project intends to develop therapeutic treatments to prevent or to overcome the maturation problem which prevent the yellowtail from a spontaneous reproduction in captivity.
